Currently, every marriage A) Gives money to the government and B) Puts that gay couple on a list the government can access. If they decide to go after gay marriage, they're probably going to declare existing ones invalid as well. And showing them we really want to get married won't help. They know.

Having said that there is the ability I suppose to check via tax returns where you can file as a married couple. But they would have to extract that somehow from a different governmental department and make tons of assumptions. It would be a scandal if it happened. Very Orwellian.

Thankfully, I don’t believe that’s true here in the US. Our marriages are handled on a local basis and the certificates are issued from the county and state in which you reside. I don’t think marriage certificates are shared with the federal government. Not to my knowledge anyway.
