Like Uncle George, whose representation of Sulu is rightly iconic, but he didn’t insist on reprising the role in the recent reboot, instead letting the role go to a younger generation (John Cho) because that’s how things work
Like Uncle George, whose representation of Sulu is rightly iconic, but he didn’t insist on reprising the role in the recent reboot, instead letting the role go to a younger generation (John Cho) because that’s how things work
i choose competence over age GT.....younger doesnt equal competence.....the problem in Congress today, ESPECIALLY among republicans, are the new/younger members that have no idea of basic Civics other than racist rhetoric to excite their base
Never doubted all he said, voted on, or did was for the good of the country. Nader is a public official who should get the Medal of Honor! (Nader of Honor!)
*Nadler
Age isn’t the problem. Becoming ineffective is. That happens to some people as they age. Others are ineffective when they are young. Like @hakeem-jeffries.bsky.social and @schiff.senate.gov
I hope he makes himself available to mentor future leaders, as he has been a great champion for democracy. I respect his decision.
He has many others not so much.
George Takei, you are a great messenger for this because of your own example of staying relevant and influential past age 80. Nadler (who deserves praise for stepping down) can follow your lead and continue to do public good. And so can other older members of Congress! ⭐
More should do this. It’s like a cemetery full of zombies.
👍🏼
Pelosi doesn’t like it when she found out that Nadler is retiring.
Thanks to Rep. Nadler for his service. Hope he enjoys his retirement.
Bravo Rep. Nadler…more of this statesmanship please.
Pelosi and Schumer to name two
These officials should have been reaching this same conclusion a lot sooner than they are now. Obviously you want people in there who know what they're doing, but there's been a younger generation full of energy raring and ready to go.
The current generation that's able to start running for office is at least 2 generations removed from Nadler. We have destroyed so much potential generational knowledge by these old people refusing to retire.
Absolutely! I think the average age of your representatives is in the 70s. Long past time to get out of the way for the next generation.
The average age of members of the House is 57 and the Senate is 63.
Thanks for the correction. Maybe the perception comes from who the media highlight. Everyone is ancient- current president, Schumer, so many of the GOP.
It is true. The media sensationalizes everything so of course people believe Congress is an old-age home for cognitively impaired people. Plus we live in a youth-worshipping culture. We do not value the wisdom and experience of older people. And that is my rant for the day.😁
This 63 yo progressive approves of this!!
Rep. Nadler should be recognized for his tireless service and doing the right thing by stepping down…Democratic politicians need look no further than the decision by RBG to stay on the bench too long… the damage to Scotus will take decades to undo, ex. #2 Sen. Feinstein…🤷
He peaked twenty years ago. Been rotting on the vine ever since. It’s tough to give up power and money. I wish him a pleasant retirement.
Yes- Bernie Sanders😉
👍👏
The idiots at @axios.com reference Democrats only and seem to forget about Grassley and McConnell. The republiKKKan party has geriatric politicians as well.
A SHART in the dark
Looking at you, @schumer.senate.gov
I'm looking at the majority of stupid fucking white voters who voted for felon racist rapist felon in 2016, 2020 AND 2024.
Nadler's decision should be commended and others should follow his lead. Time for a younger group to take charge.
Word.
Chuck, Nancy, Eleanor Horton, Ed Markey, Dick blumenthal, Peter Welch, Jack Reed, You listening?
@schumer.senate.gov
Yes, sir.
Thank you @nadler.house.gov for representing me and my family in Congress so ably for so many years. You have a great legacy, and I hope you can convince @schumer.senate.gov he can best protect your and his legacies by following your example before the 2026 midterms. www.nytimes.com/2025/09/01/n...
ATTN: Chuck Schumer.
The dude beat cancer, sooner or later you just want to write memoirs and putter around the house.
I hope Schumer does the same
We still need Bernie for his Democratic Socialist advice. I hope he stays as long as he can.
I love Bernie, but that is incredibly hypocritical. If you want pols to retire because of age, all who "age out" must also retire. Now, if you think some pols should go because you don't like their positions or their political actions (inaction), just say that and drop the ageist adjacent crap.
I did not say I want them to retire because of age. That was the post I responded to. Also, Bernie could retire and still give advice. I would definitely welcome new younger candidates.
No, we need him to step aside for someone younger that he can mentor. It would also free him up to do more travel.
So much respect for Rep. Nadler
It's not just about letting younger members lead. Letting younger members start getting leadership experience earlier give them more time to get good.
Hes not at the top of his game. That's the point. Neither are many of his coworkers and that's why they should also get out of the way.
So, he's not at the top of his game, but the "young leaders" I'm supposed to have faith in need it handed to them? I'm ready for new leadership but this seems weak
...who is handing anything to anyone? There are still primaries. I honestly don't get your point. Are you saying that for a democrat to be worthy, they must first slay an elder democrat and absorb their essence, or what?
Pelosi handed it to Jefferies. That's what I'm saying
And it's not required, but did AOC benefit from slaying the elder Democrat Joe Crowley? Absolutely
That's fair, but isn't that the exact sort of division dems are complaining about? Is it possible that AOC lost some centrist support she might have otherwise had because she was forced to slay an elder dem? What if primaries were all good progressive candidates that didn't have to slay each other?
Nope. I'm a centrist. She gained support. It let everyone know she was a serious force, because she earned it
Interesting. What we're seeing with Mamdani right now is Cuomo self inflicting wounds upon the democrat party because he continues to fight. I suppose that lends support to what you're saying, though, because I imagine there are former Cuomo supporters now sick of his shit.
I got your democrat party right here rapeblican
Of course you are a centrist.
Yes of course i am. Anything else is stupid
What do you really mean by centrist, though? Center of what two poles? Cause America's poles are both on the right. So by centrist, do you mean "between the two American parties, and are thus far right? Or do you mean, on the scale of the world, and therefore dems consider you a lefty?
No…the US politics are heavily biased toward the incumbent. Check out who gets the almost unlimited megabucks from donors. The incumbents.
And those donor bucks aren't just going to pick a favorite who is just like the incumbent that was forced out? Is the point to try to divide those donor bucks then?
Also name recognition pays less of a factor…
As an old person, i approve this message.
I don't understand why some people don't want to retire when they have the privilege of doing so?
Money and power.
"dark dark dark, they all go into the dark "...t.s. eliot
Thank you sir....for serving, and not serving.
Emotional intelligence! Good for you Nader. We’ll miss you but the future is far more important right now.
If the long timers were effective at their job, the MAGA insurrection leaders would have been punished for the Jan 6th insurrection, and wouldn't be supplicating to Russia, destroying our economy, and giving disbarred Rudy a Medal of Freedom.
And giving a hero funeral to a certain Jan. 6 rioter.
I also think new ideas are in order.
Way past time for them. The wealth inequality gap in the US is a disgrace.
I have never figured out why any of these people continue into their late seventies when they could take their millions and go enjoy life. Must be just pure greed and lust for power. I don’t want people my age running the world bring on the young that are looking forward to the future of the world.
We just can’t afford to have elderly democratic members of Congress dying while serving leaving us without representation. Kudos to Rep.Nadler for retiring.
We can't afford to have the majority of white voters voting Rethuglikkkan every election since the 1960s and voting for the felon racist rapist pedophile in 2016, 2020 AND 2024.
Unlike Jim Jordin, who's been at the bottom of his game for the last 22 years.
Good man. Always.
Bout time! Thank you Rep. Nadler.. But yes.. it’s time.. Hopefully others will take your lead.. This is their world now.. There are many that are ready & competent..
you know, repubs could resign, too
This isn't going to save the Democratic party. Even many of the young Dems have proven that they are status quo and have no desire to bring actual change.
They don't lose power just because they are not seated in the House or Senate. It means they shift from active to advisory roles. Robert Reich is a fine example; he continues to shine an informed light on policy and procedure.
Oh that’s my rep. Good for him. Good for us. Glad he thinks the next generation is up to the challenge!
I salute you Mr. Nadler.
Seriously, pass the torch so the next generation can effect change while they still have the energy and enthusiasm. Until we impose congressional term limits, we need to self govern for a sustainable future, and we need people who are going to FIGHT.
Yes, I commend him. He even said it is time for new leadership.
💙👍
ur insane. officials of that age are why we're here. his bumbling toothless impeachment is a perfect example performative bullshit that left us infested with nazis i dont care that hes finally turning on aipac stop giving parades for the fools that let trumpco happen
Imagine if they'd listened sooner...
Yes!
💯💯💯
Thank you for your service and foresight Rep. Nadler. Peaceful transfer of power is laudable in all levels of government. 🙏🫶
That’s great he’s doing this, may all of those over 60 give up their seats and bring in someone that will help the people. All the leadership should step aside because they are complicit, imho. We need young people that aren’t afraid to give up their kick backs
Now it's time for all those calling for new blood to DO THE HARD (often boring) WORK to elect young and/or new Democrats to those vacating seats in government, state and local as well as national.
@schumer.senate.gov take note!
78 is the certain age? FFS
I agree and I'm old
Only 100 to 150 more old farts to get out of the way for the younger generation!!! GET OUT NOW!!!
Hey Senator Chuck.. you paying attention? You need to go too!🤬
And may Nadler be an inspiration to his cohort. “We're all told at some point in time that we can no longer play the game, we just don't... don't know when that's gonna be. Some of us are told at 18, some of us are told at 40, [some at 78], but we're all told.” — Aaron Sorkin, et al, Moneyball
I love how the media titled it "Age revolt"... Even as their leading members step away and do the right thing they want to hold onto the chains and call it a revolt. It's only a revolt if you dipshits didn't hold on like it was a death order. Learn, grow, stop being stagnant and useless.
Rep. Lloyd Doggett (who's represented Austin for 30 years) to step down as congressman, pass torch to Rep. Greg Casar thedailytexan.com/2025/08/28/u...
After 34 years in Congress, 78-yr-old Jerry Nadler (D-NY) will not seek re-election next year. “Watching the Biden thing really said something about the necessity for generational change in the party, and I think I want to respect that." www.rawstory.com/jerrold-nadl...
Democratic House members: The median age was 58.1 years. Republican House members: The median age was 57.4 years Democratic Senators: 65.4 years Republican Senators: 65.3 years
Time for wet blanket Senator Schumer to follow suit.
I hope more follow.
So do I. I think to run for office, 35 - 65 should be it. If you run at 65, once your 1st term is over, you can run for one more, but after that, it's over. You can't keep coming back until you're 85, regardless if folks want you or not. Dianne Feinstein was 90 when she died and still in office!
They can still advise, too risky to hold office.
Since senators serve for 6 years, I'd prefer 35 - 60.
I see your point.
🤷♂️
Bowing to being despised by his cohorts.
It’s not about ageism. It’s about changing the guard and passing the baton to others with young ideas and dreams for their future. We need to let go and give them a seat at the table.
Why should I give you a seat when many of you have shown your abilities in the area of performance art more than you have actual leadership? Besides, the only young people folks seem interested in promoting are young White men who show my community nothing but total disrespect.
In this new social media environment it's far easier for people to avoid the major parties for fundraising and promotion. It's the perfect time for younger women of color to take those positions from old white men. Women like Crockett and AOC prove it can be done and done very well.
But politicians who have been in office for decades need to stop holding power and step aside. Their policies haven't worked for a very long time. It's past time for Milennials to take the reigns.
See my comment above…
Leadership can be taught. But only if people who know how do the right thing and step aside to teach.
It’s hard to teach people who think they know everything, or at least that’s been my experience.
Indeed….the people who will actually be around to live with the consequences of today’s policies should be the ones making them.
Thats why there should be Term Limits in congress they don't pass that bill because no one wants to give up on all that free $ many especially Republicans that don't do shit for America why should they keep a job that pays them well to do nothing, I wish we could take this to the ballot box .
The key is to vet replacement candidates early to prevent costly primaries that will bleed coffers and thereby help Republicans
Agree, they can always mentor and give sage advice to younger leaders. Such an all around win.
David Hogg was right. Now, all those who castigated him for telling the truth, what say you?
He’s a misogynist.
Are you saying David Hogg is a misogynist? That's surprising but I've never really followed him.
That is what I’m saying. He’s also ageist. He’s made statements on Twitter and elsewhere. Go research it.
I've looked at 5 sites for you. Whenever he speaks about misogyny, he's referring to #47.
No you haven’t. He’s had to apologize he’s accused of mansplaining for his sister. Not sure what your deal is.
I will. But you haven't given evidence, have you? I'm 72 and am looking forward to seeing a much younger congress. That's not ageism, it's the truth.
Hogg said that old Democrats need to get off the plate and that Nancy Pelosi is old, which disregards her abilityto get stuff done and how she stood up to Trump like a champ. The stuff he said on Bill Maher was not good either. Basically, that young men should not be uncomfortable re feminism.
That young men should be freed up to focus on important things in their lives, like getting laid. He objectified women instead of encouraging young men to be respectful.
I catch myself being ageistic without meaning to, when I say things like it's the young people's turn. Maybe what I should say is that it's time for new energy and ideas. This is the 2nd time I've had to back up and I'm 65 yo myself.
Ok thanks. I will.
Here, Hogg panders to entitled men who blame the Democrats for their inceldom. x.com/EricAbbenant...
Also doesn't make him wrong for demanding change in Dem leadership.
Totally does when he was in a leadership role & violating the Charter. He also doesn’t know dick abt these people it’s squarely an ignorant white male boohoo. Most of you who claim to be Ds aren’t. Fucking make your own party already so you can stop wrecking mine w/ the attacks and bitching.
Fuck David "attention" Hogg!
Wow, cursing is not the power response you seem to think it is. So what exactly are you so triggered by. I'm curious
I completely agree. But I'll give him credit- he was right about that.
Are a slew of Zoomers winning elections against incumbents? I know that Hogg's candidate, Deja Foxx, lost by a mile.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 now it’s time for Pelosi and Schumer to step down
Assuming young politicians with much less experience will be good simply because they are young is naive. Also, we should respect what the older politicians accomplished as we rush them out the door.
34 years is hardly rushing him out the door. He's 79 afterall. And if the party actually cared...many if these retired politicians could be tapped as consultants to teach the younger generation. And for the last 40 years...most of what they've accomplished is hoarding wealth for the rich.
There is a movement to replace members of Congress with younger people. The average of the House is 57 and of the Senate is 62.
There have been virtually no real investments in America by these people since Reagan. A token bill here or there isn't governance, it's theater.

Fuckin A. True Patriot. Let's get that next generation goin!🎉🎉
The only excuse not to is if they're in a really tough district without a great replacement.
Even that's a hard sell. Surely every district has at least one charismatic progressive that doesn't realize they could be the frontrunner if they'd just run. A vacancy like this invites those people to step forward.
Come on, kids. Stand up, step up, and dont be intimidated. There are a lot of you who would make great Congressmen and women.
If anything, the demented orange is proof that old age is not a good thing to be wielding in government, be an advisor, sure, but don't be the driver...
Yes!!
"Age revolt"? Are you kidding? He's in his late 70s! He should be retiring. Democrats should routinely be retiring and saying "I'm retiring to pass the fight for a better society to the younger generation. I fought to have a retirement, and I encourage my successors to do the same thing!"
Axios framed it like this purposely.
Amen!
"Democratic age revolt" is a weird way to say "the party is losing because it's full of people who should have retired at least a decade ago and hasn't kept up with the times."
If only RBG had done the same...
Boxer, Pelosi
Boxer is no longer a senator.
A class act knows when to make their exit.
He's at least a decade late in retiring.
Well, true, but at least he’s leaving on his own steam.
Yes! Baby Boomers need to retire from government and support younger democratic leaders with their voices and money!
We have our time , in the spot light, then we need to step aside, for someone else, with new ideas, to have the spot light. Hope there are some out there. I don’t hear of many
They should have to retire at 70 like everyone else does.
No one has to retire at 70.
I was very involved in my community for decades. About 20 years ago I passed the reigns to younger folks. It’s time for them to lead.
It’s past time for the old guard to step aside. They are really out of touch with the struggles of the newer generations and what’s important to them.
Please, Senator Schumer!
Amen to that.
Media framing is just infuriating. "Democratic age revolt?" You mean wanting the party to start representing more than just the 70+ age crowd only?
Yes, but Commander Sulu, We need to balance this. I believe and agree with you that succession is very important. But we must also be careful in these difficult times not to let the right fan the flames of this and talk us into replacing Eisenhower and Patton with Army Privates at Omaha Beach.
If he's "at the top of his game" why's he leaving? 😆
Term Limits
Interesting framing. Regardless it is honorable for older folks to step aside and make room for the new generation. They collectively got theirs and promptly slammed the door behind them. My generation will never know the American dream unless we start metaphorically hanging oligarchs.
Or literally hanging many of them.
Maybe Warren can stay…? but yeah it’s important to pass the torch!
Not a chance! If the democrats have to step aside, the leftist lunatics gotta go too! Buh bye BERNIE!!
Our government is not a retirement system for the privileged!!
It shouldn't depend on age, but ability. I'm sure Mr. Nadler realizes that he's come to the point in his life where his ability to serve is diminished and good on him for being honest about it. There are many 'old' people doing great things today. It's not the age it's the person.
“Bowing to Democratic age revolt.” Why make it sound negative? My parents are nearly 80. I love them dearly. I don’t want them leading our government.
Because they're not qualified to do so not because of their age.
Correct
It's the young people's turn.
💯
I concur
Nadler hasn't been at the top of his game in a long time and is just one of many examples of why we need term limits for Congress. It was NEVER meant to be a career. He should have retired decades ago.
Especially the insider trading Queen - NP.
I’m an oldie but a goodie!! Totally agree……time for new faces and new ideas!!
I'm new here and to social media as a whole. I'm sure you get this a lot, but if this is the real George Takei, you sir are a treasure.
Look at the blue ✔️. Opposite to the fascist social media X, it can't be forged or bought.
Nice. Many thanks. Imgur refugee here. Learning.
Its him, for real
Eggcellent. Great guy.
Conversely, don't follow Dianne Feinstein's example.
Definitely.
👍
Thank you, George Takei! And thank you, Congressman Nadler!! Doing the right thing for party and country!! I wish others would follow your example.
Nancy Pelosi (85) and Maxine Waters (87) both need to get the fuck out of the way.
@axios as usual is wrong and giving an absurd slant to @nadler.house.gov’s decision to retire.
78 is not the top of his game. 75 maybe.
One of the worse mistakes the Dems have made...not respecting David Hogg.
Doesn't guarantee your favs will win and the seats remain Democratic. They have to do the work to win voters.
Yep, I agree that he is doing the right thing.
Should have done it 10-15 years ago.
We all thank you for your service and please enjoy your well deserved retirement.
Take Chuck gasbag too
do you know who will be running for his seat. Strong young Democrat?
youtu.be/9ywYohqoM60?...
Did someone pay you to post this ???
Fuck @axios.com Are elder statesman are damned if they do and damned if they don’t. They didn’t bow to anything. They made a decision to retire
Hopefully a trend.
Sorry but his expiration date was long past. He is not at the top of his game...at all
This is the top of his game? Did you watch the first impeachment trial? He was embarrassing. He should have retired a decade ago.
Please Nancy. Don't run again. Please Chuck, retire. Steny, go home. Maxine, give it up. Hal, you don't belong in the house any more. Chuck, you're 90, enough already.
Not so quick with Maxine.
Any member of Congress over 80 should be patriotic and retire. Many think we can't do without them. Look where we got to WITH them.
I don’t believe in hard and fast rules that way. I don’t want Bernie to retire.
He can still give speeches and do rallies. He doesn't have to be in office to do that. A 90 yo should not be in office.
Maxine is 87. What are you waiting for.
Maxine threw Katie Porter off the finance committee because she was too uppity for a freshman. Katie was doing a great job for US. Maxine's ego was more important than the good of the people.
At 87 she needs to retire as do Warren and Sanders. Love all 3 but they can fight from the outside and mentor their replacements. We can't risk more officials dying in office from old age and possibly getting replaced by MAGA in special elections or Governor appointments.
I disagree on all 3.
Warren & Sanders are effective, intelligent Senators. Some young Republicans need to step down: Nancy Mace, Bobert, MarjiTG.
Agree 👍🏽
Nancy Mace is a crime against humanity.
Sanders is 90 for Fs sake! He can talk pretty without being a Senator. Name a single bill he got passed that people need. Pretty talk is nice, but doesn't help a single person. Perhaps the younger ones like AOC or Porter can carry the legacy to actual changes. Warren is still young enough to do good
Agree. Politicians should retire at the NTL Retirement Age and become mentors, if they want to keep working.
We need a healthy mix of experience and new energy. Screaming for everyone above some arbitrary age limit to leave would be a disaster.
Nadler is a class act and HE UNDERSTANDS THE ASSIGNMENT!
It is time for the old guard- Jeffries & Pelosi- to welcome & support the progressive wing of the D party. Mamdani & other young, progressive candidates are showing the way. Also, young D won in red state last week. It can be done. Celebrate the newcomers!
I think it’s great that he’s finally retiring but honestly felt he should’ve done this about eight years ago when he turned 70. I think that’s a fair cut off for holding public office.
#TermLimits for congress
Better to go with a bang then a foot dragging slob like the occupier in chief.
He is a good guy.
this is the era in which we actually need experience. we don't need someone who doesn't or cannot fight back judicially against a current sitting dictator. is he really a legend for leaving? or is he abandoning his post when the tough got going
A legend? For what? Being an elected politician for the past 48 years?
"Age revolt" lol, it's called retirement! The man is 80 years old, get a hobby, see your grandkids. America is the only fucking country where politicians stay in office until they die
Listen, you bandwagoning ageist, youth is not a qualification. You are going to have to prove an in-depth knowledge of the issues and a practical way of addressing them if you want my vote. I don't give a shit about age.
But who will compose stern missives ??
Nancy Pelosi….. your turn! 😐
Everyone 62+, get out! Where's the 'next' generation? Get in there!
That’s about the median age. Don’t be ridiculous.
It’s George Takei praising Rep. Nadler for stepping down at his peak, urging other seasoned Democratic leaders to do the same, making room for younger politicians to take charge in the party.
Yeah they are too entitled and in love with the grift
"Age revolt" is a bizarre way of putting it. Nadler is 78. Anyone else would have retired a dozen years ago. Old white guys, go sit on your porches and offer sage counsel. Be like Jimmy Carter.
The rest of the majority of white voters need to quit voting Rethuglikkkan every election since the 1960s and maybe not vote for the felon racist rapist pedophile in 2016, 2020 AND 2024.
This exactly!
That's what REAL leaders do!
He's just a little bit younger than infamous criminal and Kremlin asset Donald John Trump. Furthermore, 86 47 and lock him up for life!
Term limits please.
