We need vaccine influencers. People who can tell the story of the pre-vaccine era. Make it real. No judgment, just information.

The standalone measles vaccine came out in 1963. My brother & I never had measles, but I think all my older cousins did. Important note, especially w/ the current outbreak: there were 2 versions & one didn't work very well, so if you think you got a 1960s-era measles vaccine, maybe get another now.

Libraryanna @libraryanna.bsky.social

If you were born before 1957, you don’t need the vaccine. It is assumed you had the measles. When my mom was pregnant with the sixth kid, she had five us under six (including twin babies) with chicken pox and a few months later, measles. I’m sure it was hell for her. (She never got either)

Kath @kathmarval.bsky.social

There's more nuanced guidance for people born before 1957 who know they didn't have measles, or work in health care, but in general yes (for the US). If you were born after 1957 but before 1967, you might have gotten the wrong measles vaccine & you should seriously consider getting an MMR now. 1/

If in doubt, a doctor can run a measles titer test.

sep 8, 2025, 4:39 am • 0 0 • view
avatar
Kath @kathmarval.bsky.social

Yes. Sometimes they say just get the vaccine, it's simpler, & cheaper in the long run. It's kind of up to your doctor, oops, no, your insurance company which way is better (other things being equal, I've observed that the doc is likely to say just get the vaccine).

sep 8, 2025, 11:31 am • 0 0 • view

Libraryanna @libraryanna.bsky.social

Um, insurance companies will recommend not doing something that costs money. I trust my doctor. Don’t you?

sep 8, 2025, 3:34 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
Kath @kathmarval.bsky.social

I think I wasn't clear. The doc will usually recommend the process the insurance co will pay for. Sometimes the insurance co will pay for titers but won't pay for a new shot unless the titers fail. Sometimes the insurance co will agree - just get the shot its simpler. 1/

sep 8, 2025, 9:29 pm • 0 0 • view
avatar
Kath @kathmarval.bsky.social

I've seen docs say "just get the shot" when arguing w/ an insurance co isn't a factor. 2/2

If you grew up outside the US, the birth year before which you're presumed to have gotten the measles may be different, because other countries introduced the measles vaccine later. 2/2

Prior to the Hib vaccine, one out of 200 young children got very, very ill from this disease you have probably never even heard of. Around 1000 children died every year in the US, and around 15,000 to 20,000 children per year had permanent hearing loss, seizures, and/or mental retardation.

One of the most wholesome things I read recently was a vampire story, where a vampire who had been a plague doctor in the 1500’s woke up in the modern era, and after adjustment period, he promptly went out and partied HARD when he found out Polio, Measles, and other diseased had been eradicated.

The story was about vampire society as a whole being revealed, so there was an undertone of understanding at some points. Like, that vampire is at a bar, pouring brandy into a cup of blood and crying from happiness, and people around him are going, “Dafuq is with him?”

Upon finding out he’s celebrating because the horribly disfiguring diseases he’d fought against long before being turned, and he’d lost family members to, were eradicated, some people joined in with him. Generally just a good vibes story.

Sadly, the same can be said for peace. People never live the horror of war so see no problem with getting into one. Unfortunately it's also those impacted the LEAST in both cases that make the decisions that kill everyone else.

And yet, the diseases are mostly still out there, just waiting, biding their time, after all, measles is resurging, the black death has popped up in the US in a few places, and of course the C19 pandemic still rolls on, anti-vax is just evolution in action, survival of the smartest...

It’s been said for some time that vaccines are victims of their own success. They are also victims of corporate greed - varicella vaccines cost at least $200 a dose.

This is an important point. Those who were alive for polio and measles as well as WWII and McCarthy, are not naïve about the diseases or the fascism. Been there, done that. We KNOW it can happen.

One only needs to any city's older part of a cemetery to look at the average age people died 100 years ago. The amount of 20-40 year olds who passed before the age of vaccines is stunning.
