Stark contrast between yesterday’s view of the pollution 3 cruise ships hoisted on our city & today’s clear view. Which begs the question, which air would you rather breathe? Bliss, Eurodam & Princess are docking momentarily, get ready for the onslaught of toxic emissions. #yyj #climatecrisis

Really still don't understand why we don't have (a) shore power or (b) a full ban on these stupid things

The cost to install shore power is astronomical. Putting that burden on Victoria taxpayers is a ridiculous ask. The cruise industry is a loser for us. Regardless of shore power, which most ships won’t use, or dirty fuel power, the way to reach climate goals & protect our health & environment is (b)

If the cruise industry wants to continue using us as a port of convenience they should be forced AT MINIMUM to pay for the shore power. It would benefit the small fleet of non-cruise vessels that move through the port. Frankly the best-case scenario is that they would be scared away by costs.

Here’s why they will never pay, 47% of cruise ships short stop here because of a U.S. law that requires foreign flagged ships (all of them) to stop at an int’l port to avoid paying millions in fines. Trump could end that law/requirement with the stroke of a sharpie. He paused it during covid.

I'm fully aware of the Jones Act. Like I said, for the very few that would continue, yay, we get free shore power infrastructure, and for the majority that don't, yay, no more cruise ships

I was referring to the Passenger Vessel Services Act (PVSA) Unfortunately, cruise lines won’t pay for Victoria infrastructure. Unless mandated, most won’t even use it. I’m down with the yay, no more cruise ships, no more massive amounts of toxic emissions.

It's not the heavy fuel alone...after polluting the air...those fuckers ruining the sea with all the waste from the ship itself. Imagine 3000 people shitting and pissing during their happy holidays into the sea. Watch Hasan Minhaj on YouTube about Cruise Ships...

I’ve seen and smelled what their trail looks like after a waste dump on the ocean. It’s disgusting. And don’t forget about scrubbers that dump acidic wash water into the ocean. Everything about cruise ships is terrible.

Those HUGE ships are so enormous and ugly. Why would anyone vacation that way. Also, could they not dock and anchor out of port and shuttle or ferry passengers to port. That pollution is dangerous.
