I mean, it needs work but Mastodon is right there. It mostly lacks the critical mass of people I want to follow, but that's a very solvable problem.

Yeah Mastodon is a great counter to this "grow or die" logic. Honestly when I post there I still often get better responses than I do here. That place will never die.
