@doctordee.bsky.social Have you been to Yellowstone in winter by any chance?
@doctordee.bsky.social Have you been to Yellowstone in winter by any chance?
Not in Winter, no. I was there in autumn. My friend @alanscowcroft.bsky.social has been in winter though.
It’s a great pic
Hi Alan, it looks amazing, but would I be right in assuming it’s maybe not suitable for a non-sporty not particularly fit type like me? I’d lime to go but I don’t want to do something foolish.
We were staying at Jackson Hole and discovered you could visit in a Hilux 4x4 converted to run on tracks. The other option is snow-mobile groups. Fun if you are up for it but they all looked miserably cold !!
yes! the first option sounds the one !
Oh, that picture was mine, the first frost of last year occurred on my first day in Yellowstone. The tourist areas of Yellowstone are largely flat, it's on a very high altitude plateau. The place IS amazing. I've been to 31 US National Parks, and Yellowstone is top 3. This is well worth a watch:
Thanks for all the info! An alternative plan is a Death Valley hike in November. Is that worth doing do you think?
Death Valley is amazing but it is huge. And the interesting bits are very spread out. In November you'll easily be able to drive between them. Hiking wise, it's not the most interesting place. If I had the choice of visiting only Yellowstone or Death Valley, I would choose Yellowstone every time.
I think you’re right - will probably stick with Yellowstone but maybe it will have to be a summer visit rather than winter. I doubt I have required fitness levels for snowshoe trekking even though that level may well be quite low. You’ve certainly covered some ground in your travels! 👍
Oh, if you are not tied to November... definitely. But Zion and Yosemite are also both well worth a look. Unless you have a specific interest in geothermal features, both are more impressive than Yellowstone - and Yellowstone is a LONG way from anywhere. But the geothermals are amazing!
Not tied to any month - Yosemite is good? I mean they all look nice so it’s difficult to decide
Yosemite is breathtaking. Staggering. Not much easy hiking there though...
It looks wonderful but yes I need to be realistic
Great pics!
November can be a challenging time to see some National Parks. Yosemite, Zion and Yellowstone are all very high. I've been unable to cross the Sierras in Late September due to snow, and had trails closed in Yosemite due to ice. Death Valley might actually be your best bet.
Brian, I hope Alan can tell you more. But let me say, there is absolutely no need to be sporty to see the wonders of Yellowstone. The park is mainly flat, and there are many car parks and walkways to all the most impressive features.
The problem in winter is that it is all heavily covered in snow. As I understand it Alan had to de driven in specially adapted off road vehicles. Whereas in autumn, I could just drive around myself in a rental car.
