It's not even that. I just looked and only 4% of primary challenges from 1946 to 2018 (that's how the data was listed) have resulted in the challenger winning.

The DNC is supposed to remain neutral in these matters. Not sure about the past that far back, but today's party gets intimately involved in supporting the incumbent. Consider Henry Cuellar, D, anti-abortion, right wing, supported by Pelosi, won the primary as a result, now indicted for bribery.

Of course It's not the case that party leaders always prevail. Were that the case, we'd have no AOC or others. In this case, the public liked what Markey was doing. In other cases, the public didn't like the incumbent but the party put their finger on the scale blocking reform. That's the problem.

If a primary happens the leadership has no power to make one or other candidate win. It's a public vote. It can back and aid a campaign, but I doubt that alone means much. What does is the incumbent having name recognition with the local voters.
