If you truly crushed Russia, as you could have done by fully backing Ukraine, then Putin would've been ousted & his replacement could then reverse the disastrous decision to invade Ukraine. At which point you wouldn't need to worry about ceasefire negotiations. In reality Trump wants Putin in place

Putin has already stated that he believes Ukraine is part of Russia and he wants it back. Unlikely Putin will negotiate in good faith nor will he acknowledge the sovereignty of Ukraine
What next? Maybe suggest lifting sanctions because if you reward the Russians then maybe they will be more willing to seek peace? The only thing that Putin wants is total control of Ukraine.

What. The. Feck. Stupid. Is. This. The purpose of sanctions is to force Russia to the table. How can Rubio enunciate other reasons? What: sanctions are designed to make Putin's cuisine less international? - sanctions degrade Russian military function, is it unfair? What else, thumb-screws at dawn?
Errm, but if you crush them they are forced to talk about ending the war and maybe giving up some illegal gains? Am I missing something? Does that logic apply to Iran? Don't destroy their plants because they won't want to talk about dismantling the plants?
The main problem is, that we simply cannot afford to cripple our economy further .. and that's all the sanctions do. Stop the warmongers. Seek compromisses. Solve conflicts.
He sounds reasonable. Unfortunately, the naivety in his approach is the problem that most people who have been dealing with Russia for many years will understand. Putin's war can't be negotiated in the normal sense. They've developed an entire system based upon expansion.
All talks and any agreements settled by the Trump administration will be implemented as short-term pacification by the Russian half with the long-term view of pushing forward when the guard drops. The way in which the Russian economy is held up relies strongly upon asset & land stealing.
European countries are correct to build walls, trenches, and mine areas along the immediate border. The UK is correct to boost military expenditure and commit 110% to European security. Rubio is clearly trying to express the desire to be practical here,
But unfortunately, the Russian war machine will view him as gullible, as too does Europe and her many allies with their vast experiences of being taking for fools 'yet again'. Russia should not be given the luxury of recuperation time.
