They used NASA research in engineering and physics from the 90s to land those rockets because NASA did the hard work to solve the problem (that you don't get profit from since it's basically how to do it and no private company would do this part) and SpaceX use that knowledge to built their rockets.

Fact is that SpaceX is the most advanced and reliable rocket launch operator. NASA has not done any sane rocketry since 70s. NASA does science.

Clearly all rockets are going to be built by private rather than publicly funded companies due to the cost, although those companies take huge subsidies from govt., and use NASA's science, as you say.

I know who Pearce is I follow a lot of his work, I agree nasa has its place, but it’s hard for them to keep up with all the other independent scientists and space organizations when they seem to be catching up or even surpassing NASA. A 10% layoff to a bloated organization really doesn’t seem bad.
