However, there is an impediment in US libel proceedings brought by "celebrities", based on a perverse SCOTUS extension of the 1A. The Sullivan defence means that a celebrity plaintiff has to prove actual malice on the part of the defendant ie. he knew or ought to have known the statement was false.
