Everything Congress controls is subject to Presidential veto. Congress controls by legislation and all of it is required to go through his office after they pass it. That's the Constitutional process. He signs, it passes. He vetoes, it can only be repassed by 2/3 of each House.

The only named exception from Presidential purview is their adjournment, and that's only if they agree on WHEN.

No. I disagree. The Federal District should be reduced in size to just the White House, Capitol Building, Mall and federal offices, and the rest of it ceded back to the State of Maryland which originally gave it up. That can be done; the Virginia side was ceded back and formed Alexandria.

you can certainly disagree about the solution for how to best provide representation to the residents of the district of columbia. everyone i know who is a DC resident would like statehood, not to be a marylander. but regardless, it should be their choice & that’s not going to happen under trump

That's not going to happen at all and Trump has nothing to do with it. He has no say at all as President. It would take a Constitutional amendment to make DC a State and there are 50 States right now, some of which don't want their representation diluted even more than it is by counting aliens.

i am aware of how it works, i was being judicious with characters & therefore oversimplifying. the momentum for statehood & full representation was there. now, it is not

The States decide whether that passes or not if it's even proposed and it's a huge two-step, difficult process that's harder to finish than it is to start.

So I'm proposing a much easier solution, because all it would take is a law, not an Amendment, and the consent of one State who would have another city full of Democrats added to it and likely add one more Representative to its Congressional delegation. That's a gift, I'd take it if I were them.

More to the point it would cause a whole lot less contention than adding two Senators, both Democrats, splitting the country in half in acrimonious disharmony, and never passing because of it. My proposal has a much, much better chance.

It makes DC much less of a problem for a lot of us on one side, and makes a State bigger with territory that was originally theirs anyway, with lots of people who already vote the way of their majority.

So that accomplishes several ends at once: Columbians get full Congressional representation as part of Maryland, the bureaucrats are kept away from double-dipping on Federal power, US party makeup is not overly disturbed, and some power is given back to a State that had to give it up 225 years ago.

But by no means do I want a one-sided gift to a party that is currently bent on the destruction of half the country, nor do I want the Senate permanently unbalanced by a special gift to stateless Marylanders. Let them live in Maryland instead, without moving.

And being that so many depend on the Federal Government for their living in the Capital, I also do not want the Feds owning two Senate seats and a Representative in perpetuity. The Government should represent US, not THEMSELVES!

More people live in DC than in Vermont and Wyoming.
