I read an old SF short story where people had lost the ability to do any calculation of any kind and all weapons of war were controlled by computers. One man discovered math and it made his people dominant and cruel. He was devastated by what he’d done and killed himself.

AI is no less capable of making that decision than the current president and entourage. In fact, AI is possibly more capable at making ANY decision than they are. And in the full knowledge that AI lacks any intelligence, that’s quite damning.

So much for all the historical literature on the evolution and dangers of Cold War weapons systems development.
The pentagon is operating under a delusion regarding what AI can and cannot do. It would help if they had competent leadership which won’t happen anytime soon.
Ironically the latest AI are already outpacing human inquiry and decision-making. AI could absolutely create a best-case outcome for humanity, but our own greed and selfishness will prevent that from ever being possible.
It's all right, we just have to ask the AI to play tic-tac-toe if it starts acting up.
Starting a war and weapons control systems are two different things.
They need AI that launches nukes on command, not AI that asks whether that's a good idea. Sci-fi movies got it backwards. The danger isn't AI becoming conscious & deciding to destroy humanity. It's AI remaining unconscious & given the power to destroy humanity by ppl who crave power absolutely.
