30. Snippet Saturday. He swore as a new thought struck him. He hadn’t paid Radir’s paranoid ravings any mind because it was a fever dream, maladaptive daydreaming. The man had taken a sense of isolation and resentfulness and woven fantasies out of this because having to defend an embattled people from the malevolence of the entire world sounded cool. It was a hell of an improvement over the reality that he’d been singled out by more than one villain because he could be counted upon to act rashly and stick his foot in his mouth, and that made him an ideal patsy. But if the man kept lashing out like this, the Complex would eventually get to hear of it, and his fancies would become a self-fulfilling prophecy. There was no such thing as a mage who could see into the future, but Radir was doing a decent job of faking: when they got to hear what he had been up to, all the mages in the world would come for him. They could not fail to. They had sworn oaths, and no duty should be more pressing than to protect outsiders from themselves.
