“Scares the piss out of everyone who tries it, yeah? It’s not the people looking through you, it’s how it feels. Like you’re just not all the way there.” The mage shuddered. “When we did it earlier, there was this instant when I thought, ‘oh hell, you can’t use your Vision while you’re invisible, we’ll just fall through the snow.’ Then we didn’t, and that…” He shuddered again, holding up the hand that wasn’t holding the hot rock as if to ward the thought away from him. “You see what I mean? Think about the things we can do with our Vision. Then think about the way stray thoughts can blossom out of your control. Happens to the best of us, and if you plug someone into that who’s not got the best self-control, you can see how it might get away from him.” “I thought your teachers were making you better!” the mage said explosively. “I thought that was why we hired them!” “It is and they are,” he replied, keeping his own tone calm. Not soothing – that would be insulting – but just a level voice people listened to ‘cause it sounded like you’d thought things through. “As much as they can for any of us. But we’re not all the same, mage, some of us have a better hold on this than others. It’s not a judgment on anyone, but yeah: I feel like that’s the likeliest thing happened to him. He went invisible, then got to wondering if he wasn’t really there like people say, and it just got away from him.”
