trying to disable updates won't do anything btw. the discord app basically just loads the discord website, and the id verification isn't something that's baked into the native app.

sorry but literally all the "info" in the screenshots is wrong 😭 turning off autostart just turns off autostart for Discord, it still updates when you open it making Updater.exe readonly does nothing even if you managed to turn off updates for the native app (this guide doesn't), it wouldn't work
The Discord desktop app is just a browser that opens discord.com/app. You can't stop updates. Even if you could, they will probably enforce age verification server side so it would be pointless. Just suck it up and get a VPN, and participate in protests against government overreach
What if I can't find the update file in task manager? I typed it in and it's not there
Try checking your File Explorer It'd be something along the lines of C:\Users\{Username}\AppData\Local\Discord If it's not in there, then I don't know :/
Some addendums since this is popping off really quickly -This is UK only -This actually doesn't do anything as the app just loads the website and it updates through that, unfortunately Would still advise searching for alternatives, and if anyone tech savvy has workarounds please share
bsky.app/profile/ryze...
I dont plan on ever giving my id to them.
Thank god Discord's not having it here in America now that you mention that being a UK only option. Still, I feel bad for a lot of Brits having to be forced to accept or put up with this BS the British government is forcing them on.
If I had to add, use Matrix or XMPP. Or if that's something you don't like because its not Discord Enough use Revolt.
And if you do want to use these services. For screen share use Jitsi.
Oh and Mumble if you want a more Ventrillo/Teamspeak experience. These are all Foss programs.
While you all are here instead of shilling my content I'm just gonna shill this book you all should read it it's important K thx bye
....well shit
At this rate, the internet is going to become totally dead and unusable. No place online is gonna be safe, but the sad thing is we're so dependent on the internet for everything these days, it's impossible to go off the grid.
luckily its UK-only so we'll be fine
📌
this wont do anything because webpack chunks r loaded from the web updates are not stored locally lol

So these have been disabled on my computer for months and my Discord clients still update. This is a good idea, but it doesn't seem to work. I will be setting them to read only though, see if that helps, but I doubt it.
They did this ages ago for me, before bluesky even. I just complied with the stupid at this point I just am too tired to care and the UK government has all my picture 50000 times over.
this doesn't work, the app loads all its resources remotely. you just disable updating the native side. DO NOT DO THIS.
This is some extremely reactionary and hot-headed wording. First off, as many have pointed out, this doesn't stop Discord from updating on PC. Second of all, this is UK only, the one country where they specifically have started enforcing their new ID verification law. [continued]
You all should really be directing your anger at Keir Starmer's right-wing-cosplaying-as-left-wing government and his spineless congresspeople instead of the company being forced to comply with the law to keep the public service they offer running. The alternative would be a total shutdown in the UK
This is already a thing in the UK. I'm locked out of half the channels in the busiest community I'm on, because it's the only server on my list that allows nsfw and politics, and I refuse to cave to the bullshit. I'm genuinely curious to see what happens when it hits everyone else.
Is there any way to stop it on mobile?
Turn off auto updates and pray is my only advice unless someone knows better
Oh. Well thank you
*Everything* has to join the ID bullshit thanks to UK law because if they don't, there are massive penalties in place.
Unfortunately any alternative is likely to be a much smaller business who also can't afford to pay the penalty for non-compliance, and will end up doing the same thing or folding
The only way I'm aware of to prevent Discord from auto-updating or pestering you to update when it starts is to change the settings.json file in .config/discord/ if you're on Linux (or %APPDATA%/Roaming/discord on Windows) Append it with "SKIP_HOST_UPDATE": true before the final brace.

Ooh, I've had problems with Discord trying to update itself rather than letting my system handle it on Pop Os. I'll have to give this a try!
I know it works for sure on Linux but I don't see why it wouldn't on Windows as well. I've had to do this a few times to make Discord play nicely with package managers like pacman to ensure that they're handling my Discord updates rather than the client itself (which tends not to work on Arch).
That being said, I'm also not sure it will be effective since the client is a web app and they might be able to push updates or force you to update with some kind of dialog box if they really really wanted to.
i'm on windows. i've tried this SEVERAL times in the config file and it doesn't work :"(
ah, that's unfortunate. :( all this new legislation requiring IDs is going to result in a massive, damaging data breach scandal one day 🫠
Time to go back to old fashioned forums.
This one gets it
*dusts off my old Proboards account.*
Any idea if @vencord.bsky.social has anything to prevent this?
>**client** mod >**server** sided issue
Doesn't php BB forums still exist? That was the go to community or fandom hubs around 20 years back.
Gonna make my own Discord-like service with blackjack and hookers.
Why are WE suffering the consequences of parents who can’t monitor they kids they choose to bring into the world??
It has nothing to do with protecting kids. The people doing this have even stated so multiple times. It's specifically for control and to get their foot in the door so they can make it easy to remove 'undesirables'. It's so they can make it so people only talk about what they want you to talk about.
This was recommended to me a few months ago, and I haven't looked into it yet, but have you heard of Revolt?
Literally the first thing a friend did was send me it. I'm gonna try looking into it more later
I am installing it now to check out later myself.
fyi this will not stop discord itself from updating, the updater is only for the background process which has the desktop-specific features since discord is a web app every time you open it it'll fetch the latest version. only way to avoid this when it rolls out is to use a client mod
I'm using vencord and aliucord for mobile, do they count as client mods? If yes is there some option/plugin to look out for that you know of?
To do it via file explorer on Windows, go to [username] > AppData > Local > Discord
fun fact u can do %LOCALAPPDATA% instead
Time to go back to IRC.
"I'm going to do everything I can short of actually voting for the people who will stop this bullshit."
Some people sadly don't know who because politically inexperience or ignorance
Here are your options to vote for. Extreme far right fascists, and slightly less extreme far right fascists. Lets see, who can you vote for, hmm... oh I know! This one guy who says he's a democratic progressive, oh wait no he's also extremely far right... nevermind.
Is there a way to stop the client from updating automatically upon startup?
And no, the “read only” thing isn’t working, it’s already set to that and it’s still trying to update.
Guilded doesn't seem to have age verification (for now).
