Agreed but within "appearance" is some sticky ground, Or maybe it is a truly slippery slope? Because expressing your identity through clothing and accessories is fine, but at some point we nearly all agree there is a line. Usually it is a matter of $ spent, but it can equally be described as ego.

If I am in error here I seek to discover it If pointing out the sheer audacity of a person's attitude is only exceeded by their portrayal of themselves via media they produce can be harmful to those finding or creating identity then yes that's bad. Hmmm..

Like so yeah, Then maybe even that would be a line to stay away from? Because people in the circles with higher empathy are likely to be hurt.* And empathy is not something to be quashing right now. *how much something costs and so the ego that accompanies it may not be common knowledge πŸ˜•

you can just focus on their ideas and behaviors and not even worry about their appearance. there is literally no reason to focus on someone's appearance beyond personal incapacity to make a better criticism, at which point you should really just sit it out

My extreme example would have been, "Wouldn't we all make fun of someone in clothes woven from gold."* But I think I sorted it out. I kept my train of thought going so anyone else in my position might see. *this was my first clue that I'd made an error, I needed an extreme example to make a case

I think clothing is fair game if it's something someone clearly chose to wear. I'll make fun of someone for wearing a Nazi uniform, for example, but I won't generally assume that someone's everyday clothing is a fair target because I don't know what led them to dress the way they do.

this, exactly. if they look like a clown I might point it out, but otherwise I save my comments about fashion for compliments the key takeaway here is - focus on the actions themselves, not the person you can call a fool out for being a fool, but don't call them ugly.

I think the line is money, you shouldn't poor shame someone, but if they're wearing orange and lime green, or some shit, you can make fun of em for that, because they suck at style. "Bro is dressed like a reflective vest" isn't shaming someone on stuff they can't control

but "Bro is too poor for X designer brand" is, and that shits lame. Make fun of people for choosing stupid stuff, not because of stuff they didn't choose at all.
