Fwiw, I have noticed what other channels have called out. Anecdotally, CheckPoint typically gets 20k-25k views. Has for ages. That’s dropped pretty suddenly to 15k as of three weeks ago, same time other folks started noticing this happening.
Apparently some channels are reporting the views are dropping but likes and revenue is staying the same.
That's such a shame cause Checkpoint is one of the few things that I drop everything to click on the moment I see a new one uploaded.
Is revenue stable though? Ive heard for channels experiencing this views go down, but revenue and likes were stable. It made me wonder if maybe they stopped counting views from people running ad blocker
Definitely seeing the same. Noticeable drop off around 3-4 weeks ago.
So glad yt never put the mode on me but paranoid it will out of the blue. I would hate to miss checkpoint. Unless Beej is covering Sonic. But even then I try to just fast forward it.
I never get caught up in this kind of thing. My subs feed always shows everything I asked for. I wonder if it's because I mainly use Safari, or somehow I've been flagged as not a good guinea pig or what.
The LRRStreams channel becomes like 80% TTSF and Can't Draw Horses Club. Basically no other stand make the cut. Insane.
Yeah this seems to have blown up wiht a lot of people, and might not even be limited to that setting. 'something funky is going on' I guess, ugh. Everyone's views certainly seem to have fallen off a cliff, though. Sorry if it's hitting you guys too.
For reference: the first 12 videos on Loading ready Run's video page with it turned off vs it turned on.
I specifically use my subscribed feed to avoid this fuckery on the user end. Feel for you guys having to deal with this constantly.
Restricted mode isn't new, though. We force enable it for students at the school I work at. It's been there for like a decade. I would believe they broke something with the new AI age verification BS that's turning it on when people don't want it, though.
Yes, I’m aware. But SOMETHING happened approx three weeks ago that has measurably messed with a lot of video creators.
Also it says the setting only applies on that device. So check each device you watch on.
Boy I sure do love how it cuts out 2/3 of everyone's videos AT A MINIMUM and makes Commander at Home completely unsearchable. This is ABSOLUTELY only a small part of the puzzle too. ***They claim*** restricted mode only makes up less than 2% of overall traffic on YT last they ran the numbers. 👇
Just double checked It's not on for me
Logged out accounts. Yahtzee mentioned similar
I think this is something they have had forever for libraries, schools etc
I noticed your last Check Point and my most recent upload were both tagged Restricted. The only content overlap I could see is you did a story about Runscape Pride and I started the vid “hello guys, gals, and non-binary pals”. Causation or Correlation?
Is it helpful to point out that you can entirely bypass YouTube's systems and just subscribe to an RSS feed for any channel you want to follow? I'm never logged in to YT, but I get every single LRR video in my reader.
Where do you get the Rss link?
I do it through my feed reader, Feedly. You put the channel URL into it, and it either finds or generates an RSS feed.
The answer is "finds" because the RSS link is embedded in the source code, even if it's not visibly displayed.
I've found a possible, but really annoying, way to do it. www.youtube.com/feeds/videos... and replace ChannelIDHere with the actual channel ID (which might be hard to find). (Not the channel name, nor the display name, nor the userID.) For LRR, it would be www.youtube.com/feeds/videos...
Big note: Only last 10 videos are displayed.
Update: I found a tool that does it automatically: feedfinder.davidbreder.com
Ooh thanks!
Was already disabled for me, fwiw.
I just checked and its off for me, so yay. But it did also say the setting's status is on a per-device basis, so I guess make sure its off on every single thing you own?
Oh crimony. Gotta check them all!
As far as I can tell, this is only enabled on accounts "identified" as under-18, presumably an effort to challenge all the bullshit "age verification" laws that need to die with their sponsors.
I’d believe that. Plus, who knows how they’re deciding what accounts are under-18.
The good news is that they seem to use actual account age as part of that. The bad news is that if you watch videos "for children", which is to say anything fun or interesting, it may decide otherwise.
This is such a bullshit. I truly wish YouTube would get out of the creators' way.
Checked mine just to be safe. What a load of BS
@tolariancommunitycollege.com also make sure you are in this section, home is where the algorithm lives.
This could be even worse. At my job YouTube is hardcoded to always be in restricted mode and we can't change it. I believe this could be a standard in workplaces.
