3/ If there were a Public Editor, she/he would dig into this story— and see who is telling the truth. Lacking a Public Editor, NYT really needs its leaders, many of whom are former student journalists, to say more about provenance of this very damaging "Harvard bending the knee" report.

4/ Yet again proud of the student journalists at @theharvardcrimson.bsky.social and scores of other college papers across the country. So many student journalists, and local journalists, doing great independent work. (From 3 years ago: fallows.substack.com/p/this-is-wh... )

A great piece, but I would like the rest of the Harvard "trustees" (Board of Oversight and other members of the Harvard Corporation) to be on the record too. President , as a member of the Corporation is a good start tho.

I wouldn’t call this “on the record.” It’s a really good piece, but the piece on Garber and Trump is still based on hearsay from 3 anonymous faculty. I am really hoping they’re right and NYT was played. But only time will tell.

The NYT needs to burn, at this point. They’re actively trying to destroy society.

We canceled our subscription and we haven't looked back. The NYT has sold its soul to Trump.

NYT editors put "Claudine Gay" in "top 5 featured on the New York Times homepage Dec 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 17, 22, 25" While they put Trump calling for Constitution's "termination" on page 15 and his chief of staff's "tyrant" warning on 12 Christopher Rufo openly bragged about the plans:

You are way over-selling this. The tone of the NYT articles (including today's) is odd but, of course Harvard is negotiating and considering settlement language. They want legal harassment to end and they will make a deal if they think it is in their interest.

In the absence of a public editor, might this be made part of someone else's hard news series of stories on Trump-related appeasement at the NYT? Or is that just the fantasy of a non-journalist?

I though good journalists verified information before running it. Didn't think it depended on a specific position but was part of the professional ethic.
