This makes me feel sick. I was last on the Mall with my granddaughter on a rainy spring day and crowds were large.
This makes me feel sick. I was last on the Mall with my granddaughter on a rainy spring day and crowds were large.
Thanks for the report. I was unaware how empty it would be. (Apologies if you were just being sarcastic, but I did spot 7 maybe 8 folks in that one photo. Still 😟.) End of “the people’s city”?
Trump calls that "cleaned up". I'd call it "dead".
On a gorgeous day like yesterday, no less.
THAT IS A LOT OF WALKING! Good job for a man of your age. 😃
The more you walk, the more you can walk! :)
This is a Saturday? Holy cats!
The testing it on tourists ... for deployment on voters ...
Damn. Yes, it was a STUNNING day today — DC area. Sad the effect the Felon’s choices are having. So unnecessary. 😣
The reflection pool tells you everything about Trump’s regime.
My sister dropped her kid off at George Washington and said dc was like a ghost town. She met cousins for dinner and there was hardly anyone in the (nice) restaurant
Have you seen any data on decline in consumption of DC culture (besides the restaurants)? Some enterprising reporter should try to get at this.
Almost like a ghost town 🤬🤬🤬
No tourists in August. They are deliberately killing the economies of blue cities.
Or it could be that it's always hotter than hell in August, usually accompanied by 90%humidity, thus making it almost unbearable. But combine that with roving wannabe Gestapo units; yeah, not exactly welcoming.
Sad I suppose this will happen. In Chicago too … wait til local businesses close … when Trump wins America loses
Thanks
Quite the metaphor for life under MAGA, Unmitigated. I feel so sad. All of the other things, too. But the sadness hurts the most.
I feel betrayed.
Eminently relatable
Thanks for doing this.
Sad. Bullied.
Tourism in DC declined by 1500%
😂
That's exactly how they want it look on Jan 6, 2028.
Thanks for sharing your day. It was beautiful here today. Atypical August. I ran the mall and engaged as well with the invaders, went to the Arena Stage open house, visited our daughter, attended a social in my community and went to opera in the outfield at Nats Park. We’re fortunate to live here!
Thanks. Sad.
This slideshow is a stark contrast to my experience in DC last summer. It was hot & humid, but it didn’t keep people indoors. It was vibrant & bustling w/ people from all over the world. I’ve lost count the number of times my family & I have said how grateful we are to have visited the city then.
truly bizarre to see these parts of DC so empty on a summer weekend
This is the landsend near the US -Mexico border in San Diego. We’re expecting the armada to arrive any day now.
So poignant. It looks like a neutron bomb struck. You and Deborah accomplished something really useful here.
Good crowd for the opera at Nats Park this evening—Porgy and Bess. No NG in sight
No NG at Foggy Bottom Metro station tonight. For a change
I lived in DC for 17 years. It was a wonderful place to live. Not so much lately.
To the MAGAs this is a success because they see "peace and quiet" and "no Black people."
OH THE RIOTS. OH THE TERROR..!!!
Where’s all the crime?!? Oh, right…in the Oval Office.
tRump would be loving this emptiness around DC. It is in fact what he wants. It shows (in his mind*) that the people have been cowed into submission. We should all disavow him of that notion. * what's left of it
that water looks pretty damned woke to me
Nice article, thanks.
Right, but MAGA wants to change all that.
That's what I've been saying - tourists will stay away, because they (wisely) don't trust heavily armed men in uniform, under Trump's "command." This will kill restaurants and hotels in DC if it goes on very long. I'm old enough (barely) to remember Kent State. I DO NOT TRUST+
It’s not even a question of trust (for me at least). This is outside their scope. They do not have the training. The objectives are unclear. High risk.
the military in this situation.
I am not especially concerned about the National Guard. They are well trained, polite, unarmed, and have no actual role to play. I am far far more concerned about ICE, CBP, HSI, and other federal agents terrorizing immigrants, minorities, and the homeless. ICE is Trump’s secret state police.
They’ve already said they’re arming the Guard.
That is what they’ve said. But so far, visual reports from the streets of DC indicate that they are still unarmed. The NG is not the problem. ICE is already armed, poorly trained, lawless, masked, no uniforms, no badge numbers, no warrants, no accountability, radicalized, politicized, etc. etc.
Can’t agree more. Focusing on the guard is (as of now) missing what’s already happening.
If they're working on behalf of this fascist regime....they are the problem....they're traitors....they could resign but they didn't and are allowing themselves to be used against US citizens....I don't care how polite they are....
And their cars have fake tags
And they are being paid a bounty on each person they detain. Incentive is to detain first, ask questions later. And their clothing, gear, tactics, and demeanor suggest that they are not trained law enforcement officers, but more likely bounty hunters and/or militia.
THIS is what scares me the most.
as a potential tourist (nope) I can GUARANTEE that those choosing not to come do not care about these differences
Disagree with the “well trained.” Community policing is not part of the normal training plan for guardsmen. But I share your concerns with ICE.
ICE will become his personal Gestapo and domestic terrorism goon squad...paid for by BILLIONS of our tax dollars. WE ARE PAYING THIS MURDEROUS PSYCHOPATHIC CRIMINAL TO TERRORIZE US.
They are being armed....
I’m old enough to remember May 1970 when Ohio National Guard killed 4 and wounded 7 student protestors at Kent State when. 11 days later at Jackson State, Mississippi state police killed two and wounded 12. These students were unarmed.
I’m aware. It doesn’t mean it’s going to happen again. It might, but it’s not inevitable. Right now, I think ICE is a far far greater threat than the NG. That may very well change. The protests will not be happening in Mississippi or any other red state. We are in a civil war.
This makes me so fucking angry.
Orangey is wrecking America.
How many of these guardsmen and women are leaving their jobs and family behind to just pointlessly mill around and be photo ops for an administration who could care less about them?
School is just getting started about now. Think about how many parents aren't hearing about the new teachers, how excited sons and daughters are for the new year, how the first practices for football or other fall sports are going, how excited they are for the music they are learning in band.
Washington, D.C. belongs to both its full-time residents and to the American people. The Mall and its monuments belong to the American people. The White House belongs to the American people. Not to the temporary occupants, whether they are sane or crazy.
What a shame. I guess there's no long a fear of other humans now though, there aren't any. Just a city full of camo and kevlar vests. America winning again. Sigh.
Everything he touches turns to sludge.
It’s so sad. And infuriating.
Did Trump killed restaurant week in DC?
Rural MAGA want urban spaces to resemble their empty, atomized rural spaces
I have a feeling it's not going to be long before MAGA, rural and otherwise, is going to be in for a hell of a surprise. Seems they didn't learn their lesson from the first Civil War.
The Final Solution to Crime: get rid of all the people. No people = no crime. See? It’s all so simple!
This is a stock photo of Pynoyang, N. Korea. Notice the similarity?
Everything Trump Touches Dies.
Sadly, for most of middle America, this looks like a pretty normal number of pedestrians.
all those plans for parents to take their kids to see the monuments in DC lost due to the ego of Donald Trump and the Supreme Court and Republican Party that are complicit in every damn thing he does that harms Americans and the world at large. They will get their own “retribution”.
Superb article and photos. Thanks to you and Deb.
I think they’re ok with that. No people means no black or brown people.
How are the restaurants doing? Is he killing their weekend business?
Someone who wields State-authorized force must be readily & reliably individually identifiable with identifier which is uniquely recognized by a publicly available registry Not necessary identifier be individual’s name The operational authorization also readily and reliably presented to the public
Who benefits? I just don’t understand… Well done, as always…and thank you.
The Fascists benefit. They want the Capitol building to be totally inaccessible on Jan 6, 2028. I imagine 3,000+ armed troops surrounding it.
i went in yesterday & was around dupont, adams morgan, & NoMa & what struck me was the lack of ppl on a gorgeous august weekend! the photos you took of the empty mall 🤪
Thanks for sharing. I so enjoy visiting DC - one of my nephews attends GW. This is very sad.
Tourist $ going away. Quel surprise My kid starts grad school at Georgetown tomorrow, can’t wait to hear the reports
It would be a good chance to be a tourist there without the crowds, only no tourists want to risk being harassed by ICE.
I used to travel through Union Station with some frequency in the late 90s... and the only crime I ever saw there was the concession prices.
As northern Virginians we are not going to DC for any reason. The impact to the economy is going to be severe and I feel for the businesses but until people start to refuse to accept this as the new normal and demand change it will not change.
Fits perfectly with the Oligarchs firmly antihuman stance.
I live across the Potomac. I haven't and won't take my family back to DC until this criminal republikkkan regime is removed
Who would want to go to DC when the oligarchy has filled it with troops serving them instead of the people?
If anyone has photos of DC that were taken during the past year, but prior to 8/12/25, it'd be great to post to show what a great place it was before the occupation.
This is so sad. We don’t live in a free country if people are scared to take a stroll and enjoy an afternoon with loved ones, in our capital no less.
I went to DC with my parents in June 1981. No one was afraid, even at night (we had to wait in the dark for a while to get into the Washington Monument). There were lots of tourists there; no one seemed to be afraid.
I went a couple of years ago. It was perfectly safe in the tourist areas.
Same. We had a road trip to say goodbye to the giant pandas. My then teenage daughters walked the mall area by themselves (older parents couldn’t keep up). I remember thinking how grateful we are that our children live in the greatest country on earth. 😭
I was there today too. Barely got out alive!
Have the thought police started putting back the fig leaves on the nude statues in the National Gallery of Art? www.nga.gov
I think a big part of the plan is to destroy the local economy of major Democratic controlled cities.
I look at these pictures and people are debating words Dems shouldn't use/DC crime statistics/calling it a distraction. People who live in this city are being hurt and this must be denounced widely. Where are the national Dem leadership? Why haven't they returned to help a city full of Dem voters?
Jesus. There should be hundreds of people there today. This is just disgusting and so sad. Shame on all those who enabled this with their debate over DC crime and minimalizing Trump's actions here.
📌
North Korea vibes
This is Donald Trump’s America. Very very sad.
Probably more crowded at the height of COVID. This is apparently the country far-right America wants.
Thank you for the photos. We went in early Aug of 2022 and it was crowded. Post-Pandemic, happy seeing people enjoying DC.
Makes you want to stroll around town when there are hundreds of heavily armed military in armoured personnel carriers careening around. I guess restaurant traffic is also down by 25% MAGA.
But isn't that some lovely grass?
Six people not four in that pic of the Capitol
yes, fixed!
I was in DC a few weeks ago and it was desolate then. I can’t say if less so or not. If the occupation ends now it won’t bring DC roaring back. It’d probably help a little, but the problems are deep
Whoa
Sad because today was about as good as it’s ever gonna get in August.
Tom, Thanks for the repost. And to you James, Thanks for the tour, and ever flowing commentary of Pedo Prez's illegal takeover of DC's law enforcement.🙂
'Protests: Not many.' This is shocking to me. If these clowns pull this shit in Boston you bet your ass I will hit the streets. Why no protests?
They were in other parts of town, later in the day. (Was just reporting on what we saw along the mall.) People in DC are being brave.
fwiw, Jim, I did the opposite piece -- spent a day walking across Anacostia and Hillsdale, where added law enforcement would generally be welcomed...but was nowhere to be seen (gift link): www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...
Josh, thank you, excellent.
I lived in anacostia, Randall heights to be exact and no, more policing was wanted even then. Our PSA even pushed for less policing since we were vastly over policed. More police didn’t make us safer. And that was 1999-2006.
I lived in DC for 8 years - worked in Hall of States across from Union Station - walked home or took the bus. My husband rode the Metro to work everyday. I loved living there, especially visiting all the museums. This is all so sad. 💔💔💔
This mirrors what I’ve seen in other parts of the city
📌
Oh sure, you people love it when it’s congestion pricing that does this, but once it’s armed military troops and masked Federales terrorizing the locals then suddenly it’s a problem. /s
Huh? Are you talking about New York? Here right now and it’s bustling along as usual, and buses and taxis can actually move.
DC. Is the Lincoln Memorial and the reflecting pool in New York?
Is there congestion pricing in DC?
Also, missed the /s, apologies.
/s = sarcasm.
Ah, sorry! Duh. Stressed out DC area resident. Well, everybody now knows it’s pretty nice in New York.
I have a professional conf in Dec. Prolly not going if this crap keeps up.
☹️😢☹️
Thank you so very much for sharing.
The well known landmarks with almost nobody in shot despite the weather are eerily similar to shots of London landmarks from Danny Boyle's film 28 Days Later.
When I visited DC in the summer of 2016, I could barely take photos of the monuments because there were so many people around them. This is horrifying.
I did the same trip into DC yesterday. Started at L'Enfante Plaza Metro ended at Farragut West Metro. Stunned by the lack of people. Thanks James, for confirming my observations.
Wow, stunning photo.
The horror!
Thanks for the slideshow. Great to have info from the people who know what they are looking at. I see the regime spoiling the summer for everyone, destroying business at a peak season and not bothering to be the absolute scary presence that they are projecting to the country. That is, more BS.
metro ridership numbers are going to be really telling, I think
bsky.app/profile/torr...
🥺
He just ruins everything!
That’s nuts. Used to live in Bel Aire, MD and work in DC. Worse traffic than LA!
495 & 95 were still a hot mess yesterday, ha
I love our city and its residents. All of DCers would have welcomed serious intervention where crime is problematic. But troops are deployed where crime is not and where thriving business and Latinos are. As a result, our economy is decimated and our people, terrorized.
Very informative report. Thank you.
In that weather? Mind-blowing. DC gets like 3 nice days a year (ok, I hate heat and humidity so ymmv.) That's the locals staying in as well.
Thank you so much for documenting this all. Idk what the right next move is. But we’re all working to identify it.
Startling! I was there in early May and it was bustling.
Dimwits are causing a recession
All reporters need to start using the word fascism to describe what is happening here. We have a fascist government ruling by fiat. Every headline needs to use a form of that word and every story needs to be framed with an explanation of why this is fascism.
Sadly, the outlets most reporters work for are owned by one of the six corporations that own 90% of US media, collaborators all. So any mention of the F-word will be edited out.
I agree, but maybe there are a few reporters who have some courage who will keep pressing the issue or join a better outlet.
You talk as if journalism jobs were thick on the ground. If they're independently wealthy, maybe. Plenty of reporters have the courage but it's pointless if anything disturbing is going to be edited out higher up the chain.
Nope, just tired of reporters avoiding the obvious. NYT and WP both lost me. Sane-washing fascism is worse than pointless, it aids the fascists. Don’t attach your name to a story that makes fascism seem normal… like troops in DC and L.A., masked unidentifiable law enforcement, crypto bribery, etc.
Another era, I know (apologies for the 2008-era phone camera) but there were decent crowds of people at the Lincoln Memorial in *March* of that year (admittedly, cherry blossom time).
This is absolutely insane and heartbreaking.
I can only imagine what the scene around Gallery Place/Chinatown looked like
☹️
I can’t imagine visiting DC right now. I mean, not anytime he’s in office but especially right now.
I've always wanted to visit Washington DC but unfortunately I don't think I'm going to visit for the next decade until things change back to normal.
America is ruled by a fascist. Tourists from Western nations, those with money to spend, are boycotting the US or too scared to go there. We see what’s happening. The saddest part is that Americans have filled our ears with talk of freedom, and now they are bending the knee for Trump.
Shocking photos. But I can relate to the tourists staying away. There’s nothing that would make me want to visit DC now. The museums will now barf out “MAGA history,” the military presence? No, thank you. A shame. I don’t know if I’ll ever be back, or want to bring kids to see and learn. Nope.
Same from here in Europe. Been over many many times, right now it's a big no thank you.
Don’t forget DC has a ton to offer outside the national mall. It’s a beautiful, culturally diverse place with a ton of great food, art, and history far beyond the federal city.
Oh I know, I’ve been there. I will not return during this admn, possibly ever. I’m just done. No interest in this country at all. I gritted my teeth teaching social studies those last years, acting like what the text said had any resemblance to what actually happens in this government. A joke.
I planned on a family vacation there when my kids graduate from college next spring. But no way in hell are any of us going to be in the same city as that abomination, Trump and his goons. We'll find something on the West Coast to do instead.
This is the make-believe world Trump wants to rule. He will soon hire white, perfectly dressed, smiling actors to walk these grounds. He wants a movie set he controls. There is no room for real Americans.
Isn't this just the way Trump likes it -- tourism be damned?
Thank you. Sitting on the roof in Alexandria, it seems like DC is a world away.
P’yongyang?
DCRK
so sad - DC is such a wonderful city to visit and now people are reluctant… Armed military, ICE agents Masked thugs, why would you risk going there??
Wow.
Canadian 🇨🇦 here. I’d love to go and visit DC, just as soon as you get all of those criminals out of your White House.
47 wants Kent State x100. What he gets is to loot the Treasury (extorting allies, SpaceX free of tax, free ride for Billionaires, etc). We get decades of repairing his corrupt syndicate, looted Soc. Security Admin, brain drain, food insecurity, inflation, etc.
well that’s one way to prevent crime. scare all the people away first
Boycott DC. Boycott Florida. Boycott Texas. Don't attend World Cup matches next year. FIFA head a big fucking Trumper. Half filled stadiums would be quite the site.
Not content to kill foreign tourism by threats of revoking visas—or worse, detention for posting mean comments on social media, they’re also scaring off home-grown tourists. So glad my fellow citizens voted in a man who’s good for business.
That's so sad! Gonna get worse!
All those people enjoying our nation’s capital gives me a rubbery one.
Wow- this looks more empty than during the pandemic. I half expected your article to say it was 95 degrees and humid, but no! A gorgeous day! Trump and the GOP really do wreck everything they touch. I guess Trump actually loves this- he doesn’t have to look at us foul peasants
I just watched Park Police and two other large unmarked vehicles chasing two door dash drivers on mopeds on Capitol Hill a couple blocks from Trader Joe’s. It’s disgusting.
Ughhhhhh
It was an awful thing to see!
Yep. Trump is destroying America’s institutions and our economy. Tourism is already crashing.
But why aren't the monuments flooded with hundreds of thousand of protestors?? he is getting away with his fascism
Unreal. Though, six or seven years ago, my grandson (Army) was in the Old Guard at Arlington. My wife and I drove up to see him right before Christmas. I was doing U-turns on K St., it was so dead. Your photos remind me of that visit.
I lived in The DMV for 30 years….I’ve never seen the Mall deserted like that.
Trump is in the process of destroying the economy of DC, its tourism and cultural heritage. Empty streets and military patrols grabbing anyone who does dare to come out. Why shouldn’t we remove him from office? #Impeach Ⓜ️🍑
They are not for safety, they are to weaken economies that vote for Dems so they can leverage it in the next election.
Maybe everybody was in Frederick today; I was there and it was lovely. No NG, lots of diverse people, plenty of Good Dogs, a regularly scheduled protest/sign wave, and no obvious magats.
