Lots of reactions to new Eurovision branding have been saying it looks ‘childish’. Quite convenient when you’ve got a suddenly contentious international event on your hands. Let’s keep everything safe and friendly for the kids.

Of course the idea children have no opinions about the adult world’s politics is a fiction in the first place - as @zoecharlottejay.bsky.social argues for Junior Eurovision escinsight.com/2023/11/22/p... We see what adults want to keep separate from children more than what children themselves want.

This is a long way from the Mary Wallopers but, compared to your average weekend music festival, shows just how much more policed Eurovision. Eurovision security would have patted acts down before they even got *close* to bringing 🇵🇸 flag out, at least according to 🇦🇺 backing singer in ‘24.

Just how much more policed Eurovision ‘is’. Oh why isn’t there an edit button. Technically it’s not ‘Eurovision’ security, the host broadcasters arrange it. Same reason we get different rules about audience and artist flags from year to year.

But for numerous reasons we are still a very long way away from seeing a Eurovision equivalent of this from Paris Olympics opening ceremony (🇵🇸 has an Olympic committee, doesn’t have broadcaster independent enough to join EBU which organises Eurovision, only ever gets repped there through diaspora)

... That's Eurovision branding? It looks like a local drivetime radio station from 2006.

This is indeed the new logo of the world’s largest televised music event and lodestar for blue-chip staging innovation year after year. But does indeed make me think I should be hearing the ad-break jingle of local radio that played in the stationers’ I worked in for years.
