I vaguely understood the climate change stuff, as the profit motive from fossil fuel industries was just so strong. The antivax stuff, I didn’t see coming, and it kind of broke me. We’re just throwing away an unalloyed good because people are bored

Also a huge profit motive in the unregulated wellness industry. My instagram feed is awash with influencers hawking "natural" remedies.

I could make you an elderberry syrup for a cough, but imma still tell you to go to the doctor if you're wheezing, because that's probably bronchitis and you maybe need an antibiotic, not folk remedies from the 1600s, and I am barely a folk healer, let alone a physician.

Yeah - my feeling is it’s a deep well, coming to the surface, of a desire for traditional cultural assumptions to “trump” enlightenment epistemologies of reason/evidence. It can’t - especially in the modern world, so they’ve adopted a post-truth fascism to get their way by force.
