4,000 people die from unintentional drowning every year. It's the leading cause of death for toddlers and spiked 28% from 2019-2022 among children 1-4. It costs the U.S. economy more than $50 billion a year. Trump just disbanded the CDC team dedicated to preventing drownings.
As a person who was in danger of drowning twice as a child, before I learned to swim, I was saved by alert adults, but so many others aren't. I would like to see more attention on preventing this from happening.

I have been sharing the PBS post on Bluesky from last week about this. So many people repeat the false statement that guns are the leading cause. It surprised me to learn that it was actually drowing.

Maybe because everyone added a pool to their backyard because the pools were closed.
I’m thinking since school was canceled lots of unsupervised kids and pools…
Also there weren’t swimming lessons
And kids who should have had formative time in public pools at a critical age did not have that time. My only source is that I have a 10 year old who can swim well now but had a lot of catching up to do.

So if we have to specify, unintentional, drowning, that implies there is such a thing as intentional drowning?
I know it pointless to point it out with everything that's happening...... but it's wild humans evolved to the point where it's imperative to point out the economic cost to illustrate the impact of toddlers dying.
