I kinda feel that my issue is just that The First Order is just the Empire 2. I believe leaning into them being a bankrolled militia by empire nostalgia maniacs would have been more interesting.

Oh yeah more than fair, First Order's lack of real backstory is 100% the weakest part of the first two Literally just having some mild Show Don't Tell exposition of some corrupt planet doing Villain Shit and making it clear they're financing it would've instantly solved it

My pitch would have been a sort of Sith cult (who disliked how Palpatine basically used his power to just be space king), manipulating and bankrolled empire sympathizers and enthusiasts to carry out their goals under the guise of supporting their cause with their endgame being more destructive.

I always feel that maybe the endgame for the new trilogy should have gotten more metaphysical and related to the deeper areas of mortals connection to the force. Heck, focusing on Rey as a child of the force like Anakin and that why she is targeted could have been cool too.
