Fetterman grew up a trust-fund baby. His 'everyman' persona IS fake. He never really held a job for long before politics. When he was mayor of Braddock in PA, making a few hundred dollars a month, his parents were supporting him with $50,000+ a year. As mayor, he rarely showed up for meetings etc.

My speculation is that he underwent a personality change after his stroke. This happens.
