Just heard that my friend and mentor David Gergen has passed away. He was a titan of a man and his loss is one for all of America. He took me under his arm when I stumbled into Harvard and guided me for years after. I am saddened by his loss.

Whenever David Gergen appeared on camera I would sit and listen to is every word. He was a brilliant communicator, incredibly knowledgeable and delivered even the most difficult messages in a calm factual way. I really admired him and how he served this country.

Gergen was an interesting guy. Working on civil rights issues to supporting Reagan’s destruction of the middle class (IMHO) must have been a cultural shock. But he was far from a radical conservative so it’s always good to have opposing views. He seemed like a decent guy. We just disagreed.

when news shows tease who will join them after a break, there are a handful of people I def wait for. Gergen was one of them. He was respectful and listened to other opinions and was civil. Qualities that are fading fast. He knew the facts. Not replaceable but someone needs to at least try.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Gergen at a benefit for the Sturgis Library of Barnstable Village. Of course he was the grand prize, not the winner. The winner(s) had the chance to dine with Mr. Gergen. That he would be contributing to a library housed in a 1644 edifice is true to his character.
