Why does no one understand that ALL HEATHROW POLICE OFFICERS ARE ARMED?
I'm obviously joking but I need to find a self defence trainer who is willing to work with queer women with cycling and keyboard muscles
Linehan hasn't written comedy in a decade.
To be fair his pleading for attention and scraps off of JKGrowlings plate has been very funny in its desperation and in how pathetic he’s become. 😂
The Beeb is going for a twofer here--trying to make Glinner sympathetic and beginning to a campaign to undermine Polanski. As the non-fascist portion of the electorate gets to know him better, it's going to get harder to convince them that he's a worse choice than Starmer.
He became the comedy, instead.
Maybe not actively, but his life has had a whiff of Reggie Perrin tragicomedy about it for a while now
Mohammad Hijab anyone? Hijab...you know the Intellectual Woman's poster boy? Are you going to run VT on him then? His threats to corner and___Jews. Had a Police Cordon to protect his delicate sense of Entitlement and Offence. Mohammad Hijab. BBC? Hello! Literal death threats on camera! Greenline?😱
But, ok to arrest this man for possibly inciting violence but not ok to arrest people over Palestine possibly for the same thing? I'm not an advocate nor against either, but there is a disconnect in thinking from Zack?
god damn this concern troll shit is so exhausting. You are absolutely an advocate or against one of these positions. Either you are lying to us about it or lying to yourself. Ever think it's weird that you are always defending transphobes or attacking those speaking out against genocide?
Huh? It's possible to see another side of an argument that you don't advocate. That is exactly what our media does. And that's all I'm saying. You've assumed a great deal.
Was I wrong about either of those assumptions lol
A "both sides" post about a genocide bsky.app/profile/ruth...
Well, yes!
Over 700 have been arrested for signs that in some cases only reference Palestine. You really have to be pushing the limits of credibility to say that "Free Gaza" or "Take ACTION on PALESTINE" is a threat to incite violence, vs an actual instruction to punch women in toilets.
Being arrested for holding up signs is crazy, yes. Agree 100%. For Zack it's early days, so will wait and see how things pan out.
Well, one one, the protesters are trying to stop violence. On the other, the police are trying to arrest a man accused of violence. In both instances, we should side with those stopping violence. Regards, PA supporters being arrested isn't as much the issue as the proscription of PA.
Agree re stopping violence. Zack's take on things was good to hear. All I'm saying is that whoever goes into politics usually finds that dealing with the media is like dealing with the mythical Hydra. And it's rarely logical.
We should stop mythologising the power of the media. Most people I know and like hate them, and most people I don't really know and hate seem to hate them, too. We're so atomised that you can find sources to confirm any bias, these days.
This is why it gives me hope that Zack, unlike Labour, recognises the importance of social media. Talk to people directly, be authentic, I appreciate he has to do the media rounds to an extent, but you can circumvent them 😉
If you seriously can't tell the difference between calling for violence against a group and supporting non-violent direct action then I don't know what to tell you.
'possibly for the same thing?' be specific which acts you're referring to which group are people being incited to attack
Concern troll is concerned. PA haven't threatened anybody with violence.
lol
Where has Zack defended incitement to violence over Palestine?
Not directly I agree. But if you defend one group's actions/words i.e. protests re Palestine, then that logically endorses any words by same group? And I do mean this kindly because it's the kind of thing which can be picked at further down the line.
Just to add. I know this is semantics. But it's what our media thrive on and will use where possible imo.
I honestly don't know what you mean. Why would defending a group endorse literally everything they say?
Zack was asked his views on 2 examples of free speech. He supported police intervention over tweets by One, but defended the right of same for Palestine Action. It's the juxtaposition of the 2 which could be seen as messy at best.
Palatine Action didn't invite violence though. They painted objects, not call for people to be assaulted in public. There is no conflict of opinion here.
Were Palestine Action threatening to punch people in the balls?
Incitement to violence against minority groups isn't exercising free speech.
have you read what Graham Linehan writes about trans people? or anybody who disagrees with him?
No I haven't. Probably not something I'd want to see. Newsnight read out the offending tweet.
*one* of the offending tweets
When has Palestine Action ever incited violence against people?
When was the last time Linehan worked as a "comedy writer"? Come on, BBC. Be honest. He's a grifter. He's a gobshite. He's professionally divorced. He hasn't been a comedy writer for many years. Like describing Harold Shipman as "an avid fisherman."
The initial reports called him something like "an activist on trans issues" which is even more weird and misleading.
When your entire analysis of gender is no more complex than "You're a Pink Toothbrush," by Max Bygraves, then anybody describing you as "an activist on trans issues" is doing you a favour as though you have incriminating evidence on them.
Given Lineham’s history of threats, outbursts, court orders etc. it’s perfectly reasonable for the law to be wary of such a disturbed individual.
@bbcnewsnight.bsky.social all police LHR are armed that’s standard procedure so making I sound like he was arrested at gun point it pushing a false narrative. Officers patrol around the airport in groups for tactical support reasons. Lineham is trying to sway his case in court today with this.
Did news night miss the part where Lienham was returning to the uk to appear before court for charges of commuting a crime against a child. His victims may be 18 now but was a child when the offence occurred. Why miss that part BBC?
Completely disingenuous to mention they were armed police without also stating that border police are routinely armed.
Linehan has not been a comedy writer for at least a decade.
Just some facts for people who may be under the misapprehension that Linehan is a victim here. Linehan came back to the UK to face charges for allegedly assaulting a teenage girl. He has harassed several women on Twitter, including Josie Long, Cariad Lloyd, Mona Eltahawy & an anon rape survivor.
The man was sending janey godley abuse while she was in end of life palliative care. Anybody defending him is as much of a monster as he is.
Jesus. Don't know why I'm surprised, but here I am, looking more the fool.
It'd be great if @bbcnewsnight.bsky.social could explain why they appear to be sympathising with Graham Linehan, a man who encouraged his 612,000 Twitter followers to beat up women. Is the BBC in favour of violence against women? Because it looks like it.
Inciting violence against women is unacceptable.
Why don't we see the tweets? Why do the "press" merely give us the discussion?
Interesting that you frame this as a "view" when the fact that Linehan was inciting violence is a literal and unavoidable truth. As is the fact that, yet again, the BBC's editorial line is completely at odds with the views of the license fee payer.
And he wasn’t arrested for tweets he made, but for harassment and criminal damage
This arrest was for tweets that encouraged violence. The court appearance today was separate, and for harassment and criminal damage.
*Former* comedy writer
It seems perfectly reasonable to me - the instigating tweets where an unsubtle call to violence meanwhile five police officers may have been a bit much
It sounds like he Went Off when he realised he was on the wanted list, which might have influenced things, especially in an airport.
Good gods, a normal and reasonable person.
It's vile that politicians think incitement is fine when it targets queer people. How is this normal?
He and the entire Genital Crackpot contingent have continuously incited, encouraged and committed violence both medical, legal and actual toward transgender people.
I'll tell you why there were 5, they sent a call over the radio to arrest this terrorist and they all thought "ooh, a celebrity, excitement." This shit happens all the time in the police.
Police offices at Heathrow are all armed and work in groups, it’s that simple.
Proportionate yes, police just doing their job too. Though questions should be asked as to why it needed to be an airport arrest as opposed to "we need you to visit the station". Feels manufactured to grab the headline and play perfectly into the hands of Reform who see it as just a "tweet".
Linehan released his own audio where the first thing they explain to him is everyone coming through Heathrow is checked on the wanted list and he was on the list so that's why they're detaining him. He then yells and threatens them before they calm him down & check about his medical situation.
It's extremely normal for border police to do this. Put simply - when someone who is wanted, (reportedly) broke bail, and meant to appear in court this week is two minutes walk away from fleeing the continent, now is not the time to take "trust me bro" as an answer.
Phillipson had to answer some awkward questions on her determination to erode existing Trans Rights today,my money would be more on Labour connections at play here.

5 officers seems reasonable, I saw a whole van load harassing one guy outside Sainsbury's today. It's such a non issue compared to his own actions too.
I saw 6 hassling a guy in Croydon! I have no love for the police and their heavy handed tactics.

Well said
The arrest of violent alleged stalker and former comedy writer Graham Linehan
ok - that didn’t take long .. the charges he’s facing are justified .. how and when did he go so wrong ? just one more thing to make me sad ~ im an american n ive been upset since Nov 6th .. btw ~ THANK YOU UK FOR THE SUPPORT n PROTESTS !!! always our ally ..
omg .. i love the IT Crowd .. im shocked to hear about this ~ looking in to it now ..
Arresting someone merely for inciting to assault members of a minority he doesn't like?
do Robinson and Farage next 🍿
The BBC are more outraged over this than the activists being mass arrested for supporting Palestine action…
it's funny how no matter how much a person on TV tries to speak quickly and add all the caveats, as soon as it's clear they're not on the side of the intended spin, they'll be immediately and repeatedly interrupted.
No one mentioned why Graham was returning to the UK? > The Irish writer is separately due to appear in court on Thursday, September 4, accused of harassing Sophia Brooks, an 18-year-old transgender activist.
And for assaulting of a minor (her when she was under 18)
Who was 17 at the time of the incident, a child
She was 17 at the time.
And criminal damage of her phone
Dear BBC, he was arrested at an airport. By police stationed at the airport. Police stationed at airports tend to be armed by default. There, that answers your question.
Good man! Polanski is impressing me more and more, thank god someone is
Lineham's comments were vile and hateful ... But....... Did it need 5 armed police officers to arrest him? Couldn't they have sent him a letter and asked him to call in a police station for an interview?
Airport officers are armed. They might already have sent him a letter and non-response would put him on a watchlist, especially if he left the country.
"might have sent him a letter...." ? Seem to be a lot of unknowns here? Was he in breach of bail conditions? By the way I think his tweets are absolutely vile
Did they really need 5 armed officers to arrest him ? Sounds a little over the top to me. Aren't there people trying to smuggle drugs etc in to the UK that they should be looking for?
You having no idea what you are talking about is not my problem to fix.
He was returning to the UK to answer alleged charges of attacking a little girl who happened to be trans. I don't have a kid... but if he'd gone after one of my nieces or nephews. Man. What would you do?
I read that she kept coming up very close to him and filming in and he lost his temper and snatched it away and threw the phone away. Is this true ? I read it in the Guardian
YMMV and a heck of a lot of adults apparently think it's fine for a 57 year old man to attack a 17 year old. I don't. youtu.be/391RCaJMTz4?...
It's partially true. They left out the bits where he'd been harassing the 17 year old online for months, calling her 'Tarquin' and accusing her of being a groomer and a terrorist. She 'retaliated' by filming him and asking him why his wife had left. He stormed up to her.
Anyone entering the UK is checked against outstanding warrants or wanted notices. When he heard he was, he lost his noodle thoroughly. Not sure what extenuating circumstances should apply to him to get special treatment. They don't disarm to arrest anyone else.
why should be treated any differently than anyone else who enters the country with an arrest order against them
Airport officers are armed, though. He's just being a baby
No they couldn't. He was on a flight because he's been living in America and due to appear in court today. Also he reportedly broke his bail conditions.
It was an airport, and airports tend to have quite a few tooled-up coppers on hand for various reasons.
The way the BBC, press & govt are falling over themselves to paint Linehan as some misunderstood man makes me convinced that if Connelly had tweeted That tweet today, they would have said it was fine. He incited violence against trans women (& cis women because these idiots can never fucking tell)
Are you alright, BBC? You're platforming a politician who isn't Farage. 💚
Graham Linehan? The man who posted on twitter openly encouraging other men to physically assault women in public toilets? The man who routinely runs hate campaigns targeting specific people online? The man who assaulted a teenage girl and is currently standing trial for that? That Graham Linehan?
Strange experience seeing a UK party leader being reasonable on the tv after all these years
he hasn't been a comedy writer for quite a while, to be fair...
It was also his bail conditions to not tweet (rightly or wrongly), but he knowingly broke his bail conditions.
Conveniently timed so he'd look like a free speech martyr (as opposed to a violent stalker) going into his trial
It really shouldn't be such a relief that there's a politician who'll go on telly and say inciting violence against a minority is bad. But that's where we are I suppose. Thank goodness Polanski is here.
Policing free speech. “I don’t believe we should be policing toxic culture wars debates and officers are currently in an impossible position…” Scotland Yard chief Sir Mark Rowley
So Scotland Yard just publicly announced their "tacit" support for online calls for violence against trans people. Surely this will end well.
Encouraging people to sexually assault women in public bathrooms isn’t “free speech”.
Free speech doesn't extend to literally telling people to assault members of a minority group.
That’ll also be this Graham Linehan.👇 He is seriously out of control, and you should be giving your viewers the full facts.
And Zack is, as usual, 100% correct. Linehan is a monster.
'Zack is as usual 100% correct'... Was he 100% correct that he could grow a woman's breasts by hypnotising her? The Greens need to convince people on the science. This is not the man to do it.
That’s actually not what he said. What he said was he could hypnotize women into *thinking/feeling* that their breasts were bigger. It’s still nonsense of course, but not the same thing. In any case, he has long singe disavowed that pseudoscience
He seems very trustworthy then...
That time Graham invaded a women-only space to share its users profiles without their consent metro.co.uk/2021/02/23/g...
Wild how many businesses catering to queer women are trans-inclusive. I wonder if any journalists would like to probe the received wisdom that lesbians are crying out for trans-excluding spaces? 🤔
GL has a disturbing obsession with trans women. However, given the piss poor job our police and courts are doing in preventing and punishing actual violent crime and theft, they hardly have the resources for 5 officers to arrest a deluded ex-comedy writer over tweets, however gross they may be.
Why are you sympathising with GL? And what's your source for Heathrow police resources?
I'm not - he's a tragic loser with an obsession with trans women that seems borderline unhinged. I accept the justification for the arrest if he was already on bail for assaulting and harassing a trans woman.
I'm pretty sure they didn't take five police officers from a murder scene somewhere. They're police at Heathrow. Hence why they were armed. All the cops there tend to be. It is most likely that they simply wanted that many because he's litigious, and having five witnesses is better if he kicks off.
Which, btw, he has done. He also has a history of defaming people as pedophiles to stir up hatred towards them, broke the court's instructions, is about to go on trial for assaulting a trans child... It's likely you'd want a bit of back-up, and his outburst at them suggests it was justified.
All fair points
His going to be in court tomorrow for assault. I think someone threatening someone for assault online who's also on bail for assaulting some is perfectly justified.
He incited further violence in the recording he posted on his own sub stack at the time of the arrest
We know why the officers were armed, the Met already explained it: "The arrest was made by officers from the MPS Aviation Unit. It is routine for officers policing airports to carry firearms. These were not drawn or used at any point during the arrest."
He was arrested for incitement. Fair enough. I assume the Police were armed simply because they were on the spot, policing Heathrow. Five officers seems too many. Two for a planned arrest seems more proportionate, unless there's intel that the suspect is likely to resist arrest.
Never let it be said that i am defending police actions but he has a history of violence and was flying back for a court appearance for assault
Seeing as he reportedly broke his bail conditions and has publicly suggested doing a runner (he was flying back for today's trial), that intel probably was there. But also (as demonstrated) it's a high profile arrest.
He was coming into the country to attend court for an assault and property damage charge, which probably was a factor in how they chose to approach the situation.
He's released his own recording which makes him sound unhinged! He seems dangerous.
What a normal, sane answer.
1. He incited violence by telling people to punch trans women in women's public toilets . 2. They were armed because they were at bloody Heathrow. 3. Lineman is already facing prosecution over violence towards another trabs woman. He's a clear danger to trans women.
bsky.app/profile/o4fu...
Airport police are routinely armed and have been for decades. Journalists, who fly far more frequently than I do, should have noticed that. If they haven't it suggests a lack of curiosity which is a bit of a drawback in their chosen profession.
Apart from that Zack is completely right about Lenihan's vile tweets especially as these are not isolated events. He's been at it for the best part of a decade.
bro it takes 5 pigs to do anything you should see the amount of cruisers show up for traffic stop in the Black community
Five cruisers the other day for a broad daylight traffic stop right next to the college campus 😒
And yet when we had our car window smashed, it took a bystander report to get a cop. (Credit to the officers they said it was bullshit and were amazing).
Zack is correct
Talking sense
Bro if you can arrest an old blind guy in a wheelchair for not wanting kids killed you can arrest this transphobic hate mongering shittard. I hope he wasn't exaggerating about how traumatised he was by it🤣
What an absolute embarrassment. The UK needs a complete fucking reset.
Learn to read
What?
Indeed, it needs a reset to purge it of virulent transphobes! Glad we agree.
Maybe people shouldn't post hateful violent threats on the internet
I don’t approve of violence, but I saw the tweet and it was not literal incident. Now obviously everyone can twist things how they see fit but there is nuance in language and I don’t think you’d be guaranteed to convince a judge that it was a literal incite to violence.. I don’t believe it was
There's also his years-long abusive campaign against trans people and his other pending court case demonstrating a pattern of behaviour. There is nothing nuanced about "punch [him] in the balls." That non-trans people think this is no big deal is part of the problem.
I like how he's trying to say that *other* people might twist things, and never mind that he's twisted a call to punch people into not being incitement to violence. And ofc of all groups, his is absolutely not threatened at all. Trans women and tbh cis women are the ones being threatened. 🤷♀️
I was unfortunate enough to hear the recording Linehan made of his arrest. The level of rage is terrifying (especially as the police where in "Would you come with us please sir?" mode rather than "DOWN ON THE FLOOR, NOW!!" mode). I think he is actually dangerous in real life and online.
If you see the video of him going for Sophia Brooks, it's terrifying how quickly he switches from bonhomie to physical aggression. There's nowarning, he launches at her. And he's a big bloke. That's really scary; I thonk he IS a danger to women, particularly trans women and women he thinks are trans
From how he treated that 17yo that he's in court for harassing IRL and physically, and from all I've seen of him online (too much, mostly back on twitter, how he targeted women both cis & trans for doxxing, abuse and pile-ons), I'd very much agree he is dangerous. He has a mile-wide vicious streak.
Telling others to punch a certain demographic isn't incitement of violence?
The embarrassment was that what Linehan said wasn’t immediately unanimously condemned. The UK does need a complete reset, just not in the way your ilk think.
Haha wow my ‘ilk’ so you take one post and decide who I am, and what group of people I’m part of and make a value judgement. Hmmm what does that remind me of.. 🤔 🤔 🤔
Based on your tweets I have decided you are in the (admittedly large) cohort of "dull pricks". I realise you view this as some form of fascism, but that just confirms my initial decision.
All the police at Heathrow are armed, it's such a non element of the story
Yup. So is the fact their were five of them. They anticipated he might react, which he did, and airports aren't places they want scuffles breaking out. They'd have all been at the airport anyway. They didn't send five officers in two cars to his house.
