I am the perfect bike for knocking around Portland's East Side, for <$1k. I'm probably a jack of all trades, efficient enough to take all over town, but upright and with wide enough tires to feel versatile and confident in (e.g.) late night rides on bad road after a beer. New or used. What am I?

Looking for pretty remedial help here, as my experience is basically growing up with 70s 10 speed road bikes and more recently riding a fat-tire eBike. Obviously there's a vast space between. Shop recs are appreciated if that's the move. Maybe common used deals? Does buying new make sense w/tariffs?

I have *opinions* on this. May I strongly recommend a step-through city bike with an upright seating position, medium width tires and at least 7 speeds? Marin Larkspur 2? Electra Loft? Breezer Downtown. Bianchi Milano. All entry level urban bikes. Upright seating is just so much more civilized.

~$1000 is the optimal amount of money to buy a Brompton for because even though they cost a lot more new, they don't seem to depreciate below around that much. They're like Caterhams that way. (source: wife got a new one from Clever Cycles which cost damn near $2k, and my similar spec $1100 used)

You are a surly preamble or a giant or trek hybrid. Make sure you’ve got mounts for a rack on the back.

I picked up a secondhand Surly Preamble at Community Cycling Center and it 100% fits that exact bill!! I’m not a super confident cyclist but I’ve felt safe and comfy bopping around surlybikes.com/products/pre...

Lectric XPedition or better Aventon Abound. If you can find them used they're about $1k. E.g this one just needs a new seat www.facebook.com/marketplace/...

Currently looking for something unassisted. My eBike still works, it just needs a new chain... when it eventually dies I will replace it for sure, but for the moment I kinda want to rediscover the elemental feel of an unassisted bike.

Somewhere recently I saw someone refer to them as "acoustic" bikes and I think that's just perfect.

Fun! Just look for a used steel frame cross/gravel bike on Facebook. A good one is probably at/under $1k. That's been my go to for a city bike and you can take it on trails. E.g. www.facebook.com/marketplace/...

I think you ought to at least try the Giant gravel. It’s a good place to start like a Honda Accord. Then, you should know why you want something different. www.giant-bicycles.com/us/roam-2-2025

The best bike I ever rode was a loaner from a resort in Phoenix. It’s called a Townie7D by Electra. I’m buying one as soon as I can. I looked it up and it was the best selling bike in America probably because of their flat foot technology. electra.trekbikes.com/ca/en_CA/bik...

Jimmy says survive in ‘25 @jamespnw.bsky.social

Could be electric pedal assist, good for an older person like me or for the late night rider, such as: Lectric ebikes or Aventon ebikes or some of the choices for ebikes at REI. This site offers a library of reviews about various bikes. www.bikeride.com

Search FB marketplace for either an older Mountainbike, or a commuter with at least an 11-speed internal hub as wet PNW weather is rough on bikes. Fenders a must, lighting optimal. Your local bike shop is your best resource. Look for one with more than one main brand, and a big busy repair shop.

Ok I did not read your requirements well enough; the tires are fine but they’re not super wide, and the position is decidedly less upright than I, a hefty man in his late 40s, would prefer some of the time.

are you sure you don't want to go electric? the ride 1ups seem dope and aren't far offf that price point

yeah, I have a fat-tire eBike that just needs a chain right now, and I will replace it with another eBike when it inevitably dies (the OEM no longer exists, drivetrain is unsupported, etc) for now the simplicity of an unassisted bike is appealing, as I haven't had one in ages

Tarnado, Area Grill Dad @tarnado.bsky.social

I just used, for the first time ever, one of these fixie step-through cruiser bikes in a large, fairly flat area. It was extremely forgiving, easy to ride and fumble around with, and all-around just ... fun? I was surprised. Available from Bed, Bath, and Beyond I am not making this up
