One of my partners just told me that in law school he didn't know what a justified margin was. He would get assignments back with the comment "justify" on the side of the page and think, "I've already written a justification, what more do they want me to say!"

Your honor my client didn't murder a group of people because 'they were obese drug addicts'. The defendant is a typographic designer and so when officers asked could he justify the killing of 28 people he naturally replied "yes but only if they were made bigger and spaced out, then it'd be easy".

This is why as an editor, I specify in review notes “paragraphs not consistently justified, many left-aligned” Also, I bet your partner still uses two spaces in between their sentences

Namespace collisions happen so often in natural language that you'd think people would get used to them, but there's always that edge case. Also, people can have weird gaps in their knowledge. I heard like 1 song by The Who from birth..2008, and that was a totally weird culture deficit.

There's an urban legend that once an FBI field office sent a memo to J. Edgar Hoover in DC about...something. Anyway, it was returned to them and all the was writtn on it, in the margins, was "Watch The Border." Whereupon they sent every available agent to the Mexican border.

Hoover of course was talking about the margins. (I think, but I'm not certain, it was one of my law school profs who shared that one.)

Understandable. During my Teens I was a (semi-)professional Stage Performer who didn’t know what “Articulate” meant (dumb kid), to the chagrin of our Directors (who assumed someone at my level would know Words 🤭). 🤣🤣🤣

Every typing class I took, right justified margins were the last chapter. They looked scary. Thankfully, "word processing" came along in the 1970s, and I never had to worry about them again. Still had to do widow/orphan passes, though. Needed a hyphenation dictionary for those. Sorry I never got one

Waiting for some snowflake to rise up and squeal that "ragged right" & "ragged left" have negative political connotations ...
