Working with a bunch of amazing colleagues, I dropped my hours over the summer to avoid compulsory redundancies in our school as the university “resized”. I no longer work Mondays, so I’m sat on the beach in the sun, as the DFDS ferry arrives from Amsterdam.

A beach with a walker and some swimmers in the sea, with the DFDS ferry arriving from Amsterdam on the horizon.

It was a tough decision and a tough process - and a destructive early summer, but, in all sorts of ways, I’m going to make sure I revel in my days off.

Big positive, though, was to work with some fabulous colleagues in an act of collective solidarity, rejecting the divisive and competitive logic of redundancies. So there’s that.

Fortuitous timeline.

Bluesky timeline showing one poster talking about working a four day week, with a post from the 4 day week foundation underneath it

Four day weeks are definitely the way forward; I worked part-time for years and actually only went back to full-time a few years ago. I would have preferred to switch to four days in full pay though!

To be honest, I'd happily move to a four day week with four days pay.

When I first stayed in Amsterdam I thought the costs were insane. Some things really are steep while others just seem that way. I broke down what surprised me if you’re curious: bsky.app/profile/alex...
