6. Professional boundaries: Keep personal and work accounts separate when possible. Be careful about what you post that might compromise your career or reveal workplace info.
7. Family safety: Be mindful with kids' content. School uniforms, team jerseys, or badges can reveal identifying information. Use "close friends" lists for content you don't want widely shared, or better yet, keep your children off the internet entirely.
8. Digital footprint: Google yourself to see what's public. Request removal from data broker sites. Use different usernames across platforms to avoid easy tracking.
9. Harassment & stalking prevention: Block and report, don't engage. Screenshot everything. Make accounts private or take breaks if you're being targeted.
screenshot and archive everything!!
Turn off DM settings to avoid harassment especially here on Blue Sky.
10. Financial & identity protection: Never share financial info, full birthdates, or other verification details online. Don't take online quizzes and watch for scams using your publicly available information.
You don't have to stop sharing online. Just be intentional about what you post and when. I have a whole TEDx talk on unlawful surveillance, so let me know if you want more tips about how the government may be surveilling you.
I am always trying to share tips—plus legal + political insights. If you found this helpful, follow me @elizaorlins.bsky.social for more. ✨
In other words: live a very private life. Thank you for all this, btw. Excellent info.
Great information! Followed.
Thank you
🙏🏻
Thanks for the tips, Eliza.
Thank you
Thank you! Followed🌷
As someone in the cybersecurity community and specifically in the #osint community, very true and can you share the link to the talk
Link to your Ted talk?
Thank you
What about apps, bits of code, etc remotely placed on your phone or laptop to gather info or track someone without their knowledge. Info not used in court case just to be used by them for investigations. See COINTELPRO/CHurch Committee Investigation Report c. 70s. Thanks
If you have the bad luck of being arrested and taken in Don't speak of your case even to a "jailhouse lawyer". A few are good others may seek info to use to their advantage. It's natural to want support but "snitching" to reduce sentence is a thing. & don't take stuff from Cons you'll pay it back.
Yes more pls 🙏 How should citizens be intentional and skeptical online as law enforcement and government surveillance expand in “Trump’s America”? How should we be vigilant w encryption and digital hygiene since SSA data, AI, Palantir, and Israeli tech increase risks? This seems a helpful resource:
Thank you
I’d add: use 2 factor authentication everywhere you are able. At minimum, email accounts and bank logins. If you can swing the cost for a service like DeleteMe, that helps with data brokers. Use a secure password manager and have unique passwords everywhere.
Use tools to strip exif metadata from any media you upload.
Do you have suggestions on particular tools? Or what I would search on?
For Android: Photo Exif Editor For iOS: EXIF Viewer by Fluntro
Awesome thanks!!!
Alternatively, Signal strips it all automatically, so if you're in a hurry you can just send the picture to yourself.
I've had a million phones and this has always been a setting thats on by default in their photo apps is this not actually happening or are we giving people "install antivirus" advice
Thank you for this!
Can you give me the names of some data broker sites? Good info. Thank you.
You can use a service like Incogni. I found it very effective in reducing my online footprint.
Thanx, knew a little bit of this but you laid it out So well, and did learn some things. Any info on browsers and apps that spy on user? Wiping apps?
You’re the real MVP.
Thanks so much!!!
Than you for these. I hear adds on my podcasts for DeleteMe which supposedly does this. Do you suggest those type of apps?
Thank you !!!
omgGAWD!!! I just did and I am blown away… Found way too much information on this website about myself, someone could literally come to my home with only my name. 🤯 Seemingly, one can request themselves to be removed. I recommend all of you look into it and see if your name comes up on this site
Just remembered, what about cellphone through airport security?
I was just driving around with my wife earlier and saw lawnsigns for a local school's sport team that had the kids names, year of graduation, and the school on it. It is a privacy nightmare, but clearly a well intentioned effort for school pride
that’s something i noticed over the past few years. the absolute last thing i need is my child’s school, full name, picture, and class plastered on my front lawn
I would also suggest keeping dogs off the internet.
