I never know how to feel about this movie. It’s very well-executed and the bit they do at the beginning that “explains” why they all speak English is elegant. But every actor feels miscast. It’s not just that they’re speaking English, it’s that they all come off as English, not as Germans.
The film feels more like a fever dream representation of the romantic heroes the Prussian officer class imagined themselves to be instead of what they actually were.
I like that the German government got mad that Stauffenberg got portrayed by a Scientologist though
I don't think it is possible in a movie to convey what specifically led people of that officer class to follow that man, or to turn on him in that moment. Both moves are too alien. The movie makes a stab but, honestly the roles are German and should be played by Germans.
Stauffenberg was 6’3”. Little Tommy is 5’7” They used some fancy camera angles and probably a few boxes to pull that off.

Oof, yeah. I started watching it recently. Eddie Izzard's first scene is...not great. But you're exactly right that everyone in it is miscast...except Cruise. He's perfect as the upright, maybe priggish Stauffenberg
Has Cruise ever played a part he's not perfect for? He's crazy but he has got IT... possibly they go together?

He has the intensity but not the physicality to play Reacher. Reacher needs to be huge and fucking scary. The guy in the series has the body but is too sunny and happy the first couple seasons but gets the “I’m gonna fucking hurt you” energy in the latter ones.
