After we were finished I was chatting with a guy there who likes birds too and I was like "so ARE there red tails here?" and he said in theory there are but not many. And then I saw one on my bike ride home!

After ten years in California, going two months without seeing a red tailed hawk has been so strange lol
They're definitely around! I mostly see them perched on hydro poles beside the highway (because of course)
I'm just so used to them being everywhere!
Yeah! I grew up in Calgary & they are *way* more common there, too! I don't think i've seen very many, if any, on this side of the Hump. Maybe they really don't like bald eagles (which are very abundant, as are turkey vultures) We have lots of merlins & American kestrels here though
Yeah there's just not a lot of open country! And tbh until the rabbits, probably not a ton to eat
Yeah, the rabbits probably help explain why there's more of them on the west side. We have rabbits here too, but we also have more wolves & cougars on this side
did i say "west side"? I meant EAST SIDE!
😂 that's what i figured
i've got the brain fogs bad today!
Did you ask him if he uses Merlin?
he's an inat guy! haha
