Surely we need to do both, as in "tough on crime, tough on the causes..."? It seems to me that e.g. Starmer might be making the opposite mistake now - focusing too much on his long term socio-economic fixes (however unconvincing you may find them).

Yes, we can. I'm not sure, though, that Starmer fully appreciates the link between economic stagnation and reactionary/racist politics. Nor, I suspect, do many pols & journos.
