If you feel the need to spend $250 - $600ish dollars (not counting license and ammo) on a weapon that poses immense risk to you over an imagined fear of coyotes stalking you, seek help. Seriously. Coyotes are small, shy, fearful of people, and eat birds, squirrels, and bunnies. Relax.

From acct Gideon Samuel - Are there no coyotes in residential Austin? Mountain lions? How about human predators?

Mountain lions are scarier but they still aren’t sneaking into your house

Idk why people are so scared of coyotes. Yes, they’ll stalk your chickens, but shooting them isn’t the solution to that. And guns are both very expensive and very unsafe TO THE PEOPLE IN YOUR HOUSE. It’s wild that people argue for them like they’re reasonable additions to most homes. They aren’t.

Coyotes are part of life. They’re small, very shy, and stalk birds and bunnies. Secure your coop at night, get a livestock guardian dog, and move on. Sitting up at night with a shotgun is crazy work.

No one in that area is even allowed to keep a chicken coop. And no, it’s NOT reasonable to blast a shotgun at an animal in a residential neighborhood full of kids.

Idk if you’re talking about a specific area (in which case my bad) but you are allowed to have chicken coops in residential areas in Austin! Someone in my neighborhood has one. They don’t shoot at coyotes though, if that’s even an issue (I haven’t seen one), because that would be ridiculous.

It’s Round Rock, by Old Settlers. We have a municipal code against chickens unless you’re in an unincorporated MUD.

Ooooooo gotcha! Weird that Austin proper allows it but Round Rock doesn’t

There are efforts to change it! There needs to be some restructuring w all the recent growth - lots of stitched together MUDs and confusion.

You're way more likely to encounter deer or the errant roadrunner out here.

The wildlife that vexes me most around here are the bunnies that eat my sweet potato greens 😡

I see caracara out here every so often. They like to hunt near the quaker parrot nests. Not a fan of that personally, but circle of life and all that.

Found this one in the Crestview area the other day. There's a parrot nest in a cell tower quite closeby.

Crested caracara, chillin' on a power pole.

My rare animal claim to fame is seeing a ringtail cat up close while walking through a quiet path over Waller creek on campus one night. It froze, stared at me with its huge bambi eyes, I told it it was very cute, and it ran off. 😊

Telling wild cats they are cute is a public service.

the “human predators” are the ones that have free access to military weapons and try to prevent red flag gun laws..

Coyotes to me are just little or medium sided wild dogs, which could be easily tamed with a little effort.

I live right next to a forested state park, with the usual assortment of wildlife, including coyotes. All you need for those is an airhorn. (you can get them at sporting good shops in the marine recreation dept.) Bears OTOH, might need bear-spray as a backup if the horn doesn't do it.

The gun nuts can't wrap their minds around the fact that having guns in your house makes you MORE, not LESS, likely to suffer gun violence.
