He didn't bankrupt them, he used his businesses for money laundering. He had no intention of keeping them open. Bankrupt was just the end game.

It is possible to be money laundering and so inept that you still manage to screw that up too. I think rachel maddow did a show on how he was doing that with real estate but still managing to be very in debt to russians.
