Acting under the authority of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act of 1977, President Trump imposed a 10% tariff on imports from all countries, along with additional tariffs on nations with which the United States carries its highest trade deficits. My top priority in Congress remains protecting New Jersey jobs and families while ensuring our economy remains strong and globally competitive. I support smart, targeted tariffs that defend U.S. industries without endangering our ports, small businesses, or critical supply chains. That's why I've maintained regular dialogue with local business owners, port operators, and labor leaders to anticipate the potential impacts of tariff policies and develop proactive solutions. I believe the current tariff structure serves as a strategic negotiating tool to help achieve more balanced trade agreements. I will continue to engage with stakeholders across New Jersey to monitor the effects of these policies in real time. As the Administration advances this renewed approach to reasserting American economic leadership, it is essential that we ensure these policies support our domestic industries and maintain our competitive edge.
