I think it’s to balance out the fact that smaller competitors can avoid the lasers more easily

100% disagree. Everybody has advantages or disadvantages based on their size, age, agility, etc. some competitions it pays to be small, and some competitions it pays to be big and strong. It all evens out eventually.
