I grew up in a not-nice neighborhood where the cops were neutral at best and ready to fuck up your life if they felt like it. Now I'm a grown-up and live in a nicer neighborhood where the cops are pleasant and helpful, but I never forget that they're not all that way and I'll always be wary.
I remember having this conversation with friends who were skeptical at the time of the BLM movement and the most persuasive thing I said, imo, was "inner city policing should not look different than suburban policing" and it clicked for a lot of them
AOC has made this point as well. I think a lot of people just genuinely don't realize there's a difference, much less how big the gulf is. Another casualty of everyone selecting into their preferred universe and never experiencing anyone else's point of view, I suppose.
