Because this is where I got a job. I teach history at a university in New Jersey. I also married an American. Life is complicated like that. But I dream of returning home someday. You don't like immigrants?

I do like immigrants. My grandparents were immigrants. I just don't like being told there is no sane America. I didn't vote for this nightmare and neither did most of the folks I know. We're just trying to figure out how we'll handle the next four years.☹️

There are sane Americans. I actually married one. But there is no "sane America." Collectively, Americans are ignorant, arrogant, and deeply disturbed. I say this as a historian of the US and a college professor who meets hundreds of young Americans every year and has to battle their ignorance.

It is worth remembering what it took to end the Third Reich, and what the Nazis were able to do before it was ended.

It took the worst war ever fought. 80,000,000 dead best estimate. Hitler didn't have any nuclear weapons. Trump is about to get 5,000. Believe me when I say I understand what's at stake.

Recent research suggests a toll of >200,000,000 (earlier estimates vastly undercounted civilian deaths in South and Southeast Asia, and in eastern Europe). So, the "next act of Germany" demanded death and sacrifice on a vast scale. Do you really think that is in the cards right now?

We have a rapist adderall junkie that wants revenge for every humilation he's ever suffered on the entire human race. "I'm sorry, what was the question?"

Fair. But I don't believe that will lead to a world war, since all of the world's superpowers are going the same way. Besides his wealth and power, in a global market, is global. A world war will demand states to fight it... And we are witnessing the dissolution of the liberal state. Everywhere.

I'm more worried about darker possibilities being as I am LGBTQ and my wife is Africa-American. We now must start thinking like Jews and Slavs in 1920's Germany.

Excellent writing. Very poignant. There are a million mass graves around the world filled with people who thought it wouldn’t happen to their nation, and the rule of law would protect them.

I fully agree. It is no longer possible to "go back" to an imagined golden age. We are now fighting for the future in the depths of a dark age. I don't know how we do that (yet), and I fear that it will be a long dark age. But I am a historian, and I know that nothing lasts forever.
