Ah, my initial positioning of Oban was correct, off Britanny. But here is what threw me. I need a mirror image of New Zealand. I can't simply rotate it. It needs to be inverted horizontally and vertically. Shame.

I never caught that but yes you’re right lol. Still a cool idea though
Should be 'relatively' easy to do in #rstats, if it isn't a solved problem by tomorrow evening I should be able to figure some code out then.
I think thetruesize.com should add a flip option instead of rotating compass points. Given that the point of the site is to overlay countries.
👀
Turns out I had done almost all the steps for a past 30 day map challenge. Using the basic country coordinates in the maps package, while they are not detailed, has the advantage they are easily changed. #rstats code at gist.github.com/thoughtfulbl...
Nice one.
Salamanca Rd Wellington and Salamanca, Spain are almost antipodes.
I suppose there's a version of this map where you project the whole world in one colour, and then the antipodes in another and then you could see this information for every country
There was a spinning globe thing at some point but I haven't found it in ages
I had seen an animated spinning version of this (I made a simplified stationary one, here), but it might take the wayback machine to work back to it. bsky.app/profile/thou...
Are y'all forgetting Earth Sandwich? earth-sandwich.netlify.app
For a casual version it is much easier to quickly do the Northern hemisphere showing an antipoded Southern Hemisphere- if you show Europe and Africa as an antipode, you hit all the jumping from +180 to -180 problems NZ has with maps with the Chatham Islands (which are beyond my lunchbreak to fix)
This was still really cool. I never clicked that South America and Asia were antipodal. Also it's funny seeing Australia floating alone in the Atlantic lol.
when I moved from North Carolina to Perth, I noticed that was the closest antipodal city
I was thinking the original one had NZ way too far east 😅
Yup. Hence the "I think...." The issue I had was I was checking different points and they all conflicted with each other. As the flip was not figured into it. Mistakes on the internet are always popular.
Posting it online anyway was a good idea, we got to figure it out together. And in a rare online event, nobody was rude or called anyone names lol.
I called myself a name in my head.
If it's any consolation, some years ago I, a self described expert data generalist, wondered why there were 10% fewer road deaths in February and it was gently pointed out there were 10% fewer days in February. Having a community that will correct mistakes and not be mean about it is very valuable
Interestingly, the antipodes of most land masses are oceans
useR 2013 in Albacete, Spain, narrowly missed being antipodal to NZ
My claim to fame in Montpellier’s Eucalyptus Congress 2018 was that no one came farther away than me.
Christchurch in its rightful Spanish speaking position.
I did some quick maths on the lat / long to find out where the antipodes would be for me (or at least for the marina where I keep the boat - didn't quite want to drop a pin on my house). So it's now on my travel destination list ... maps.app.goo.gl/i5wSkERcxcLh...
right by Marbella, or the Costa del Crime as my wanna be eastend gangster team member used to call it.
🤣 I had better be careful then
I reckon avoid making deals with men who have more than one large gold ring on their fingers with wide boy London accents and you'll be fine.
😂 My brother has just returned to Santander, Spain - so he's pretty close to the antipodes for me ...
Hmmmm - might get him to go on a road trip at some stage and stop at a restaurant around Malaga and I could anchor the boat at the exact antipodes at the same time ...
