Def Leppard gets their first #1 UK album today in 1987 with “Hysteria” — now famous for helping to bridge 1980s metal and pop. “It was trying to cross over, and hard rock bands didn’t really do that,” said Phil Collen. “I think it’s the best thing we ever did.” “Armageddon It”

I had the Pyromania album back in 1983. Today I wonder why anyone likes their music.

What a disappointment this album was. Overproduced and ponderous. Hard to think of a band with a bigger step down than going from Pyromania to Hysteria.

I remember this well. I was 17, it was my birthday and I was working at a bank (which I hated). My co-workers chipped in to give me a gift certificate for HMV and I used it to buy this album which I subsequently played to death.

Wild that in 1987 Phil Collen and Phil Collins both had UK #1 records.
