First thing that struck me is that's a common place to get bruising from IV needles in your hand during a hospital visit, no? My father and father-in-law often had bruising on their hands.
My elderly parent, who is on a blood thinner following a minor stroke, often has hand bruising like this resulting from the minor bumps and scratches of daily living.
