Why Congress Should Support Impeachment of President Donald Trump Reason #2: Political Survival The public and the Dem voters are majorly turned off by the perception that the Dems are not fighting back against the Trump regime. The result is the Party’s -30% net approval. Among Dem voters, approval dropped 14% since last November. In spite of voter’s distaste for Trump (-10%) and serious antipathy toward his policies (-12% to -46%), the generic Congressional ballot favors the Dems by only 3%. The Blue Wave is more like a blue waver. If voter anger against the party is not addressed, Dem voters may stay home in the midterms, dooming Dem reps to lost elections and perhaps dooming the country to permanent authoritarian rule. If it is made clear ahead of time that conviction in the Senate and removal are not necessary for impeachment to be a weapon for slowing the agenda of authoritarianism, there is little political downside to repeated impeachment votes in the House. Instead, fighting back will no longer be in question. These are rough numbers from recent polls as of 2 August (not kept updated):
