Small press and micro press publishers are typically not business-minded people. They are just regular joes and janes who like books so much that they want to put more of what they love out into the world.

But they don't reach a lot of people.
I just uploaded Saddle Road Press' 66th book (since 2011) to the printer/distributor. Getting traction for our books (and authors) is very hard when the advertising budget is zero.
I beg to differ. My daughter runs @flyonthewallpress.bsky.social single handed and is exceptionally professional and business-minded. Hence she's been shortlisted by British Book Awards five times as small press of the year in the north, winning it in 2024.
Congratulations to your daughter! Not sure how your one data point disproves what I said, though, which was not an absolute to begin with.
If small presses are not professional, they very quickly go out of business. There are many very good professional indie presses out there.
Are you suggesting small- and micro-presses are bad unless they're run by someone with a MBA, and/or wildly successful? What is your issue with these smaller publishers?
None at all. I'm simply saying they are professional. How is that a negative? Clearly I support small presses. And fyi my daughter has no formal business qualifications so not sure why you're going on about MBAs.
I said small press publishers aren't necessarily business people, but do what they do out of love. You disagreed with that, then implied they are not professional (presumably because they are not business-minded). If these aren't your feelings I'm at a loss about the point of your initial comment.
😘😘
an enrich our society disproportionately.. bless them.. and support them
Yeah I’m looking to be a mini press publisher for my books. I was sort of another but it’s not serving me well so I strike out on my own unless I can find a small press that is helpful and supportive.
