Some JDs have been good university presidents. But, all of those started as academics.

Back in the teens the University of Missouri and the University of Iowa experimented with non-academic businessman presidents (the UI search in particular was nontransparent and very sketchy, avoiding faculty input by interviewing the guy in an airport lounge at O'Hare). Not good at all.
