A1 It's interesting how the Kohathites are counted in the census starting at age 30, which seems relatively old. They may need those years of experience to work with the most sacred objects. #ParshaChat

That age definitely means brute strength is not critical, but avoiding any Hey Guys, Watch This! behavior *is*. #ParshaChat

That they become eligible at 30 and retire at 50 would seem to indicate that they need to be at the peak of mental acuity, with quick reaction times, and if not brute strength still need a certain amount of physical robustness #ParshaChat

That's a good point — that would be a really important thing to avoid in the Mishkan. #ParshaChat

A1: That raises questions for me about what the census was for, exactly. #ParshaChat

They retire at 50, too, so only 20 years of eligibility for that job, which is ... rough on the person, but almost certainly safety-related. I wonder how the transition was scripted. #ParshaChat
