Fun fact: The term “gaslighting” comes from the 1938 play "Gas Light", where a man dims the lamps then denies it to make his wife doubt her sanity.

You must have read a false source, it derives from the German ‘gaslitung’ meaning ‘to mislead or confuse’.

No, the OP is correct. The accepted etymology for gaslighting comes from the play Gaslight. And it doesn't exactly mean to mislead or confuse. It means to psychologically manipulate someone.

Which is a lesson to think critically! If anyone did this to me, I'd change the lightbulb and if that didn't work, call the power company. Same works with other issues. Don't believe something is true until its verified by 2+ sources. BTW my husband is a great guy.

Thank goodness this play didn’t take place in the early 1970s. We might have had a psychological torture method known as ‘lava lamping”.

The 1944 movie "Gaslight" is based on a play named "Angel Street." The term gaslighting refers to what the bad guy was doing to his wife in the movie, trying to make her think she's going crazy. It's easy to look these things up. No need to speculate. This is from Wikipedia:

Star Trek TNG, Chain of Command Picard is captured and the torture is to get him to believe there are five lights when there are really only four. Picard, of course, beats it, and the last line is "THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS" Lets remember there are four lights.
