It’s very dumb. FWIW, if you are like me and too lazy to go until your license expires, a passport/passport card is sufficiently magical. Also dumb, needing my passport for travel between states. Shocking the level of big government we’ve seen rise up during our lifetimes.

As much as I hate the current administration, the REAL ID program was passed by Congress 20 years ago: "... the goal to “set minimum security standards for license issuance and production.”
