The amount of anti-renter bias from homeowners in the Charlottesville area is incredibly frustrating. It’s often coupled with a general dislike of students, which is a weird attitude to take in a college town.

An all too common attitude in college towns, sadly.
As a student renter in a college town I got the snotty "Do you pay taxes here?" a couple of times, as if people don't know where landlords get their property tax money from.
Or as if you don’t buy anything or support the local economy by paying tuition
The anti-UVA sentiment here runs very deep in certain quarters, which is wild to me.
I completely understand anti-UVA sentiments. Directing it towards 19 year olds looking for a place to live is not the right target
Oh very much, that is what I meant really. Deeply love the school as an alumni, but also get frustrated and angry too. What's the adage, the opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference? That kind of fits here too.
I confess to my share of irritation with neighboring rental properties, but they are entirely directed at shitty landlords who don't do maintenance, landscaping, or enforce basic rules about things like leaving trash barrels strewn all over the street or running retail drug distribution operations
Unfortunately we live in a state that doesn’t allow much in the way of tenant protections and in a city that has dramatically under built, thus giving landlords all the power and minimal need to upkeep their properties
Worse, the state allows even less in the way of enforcement against property owners. As we have discovered, as long as property taxes are paid, there is little anyone can do, no matter how many code violations or dead bodies pile up
The system working as designed!
