Probably James Ellroy. (I’m omitting dead people—too easy.)
Probably James Ellroy. (I’m omitting dead people—too easy.)
He’d come to the movie theater I worked at and would bark at people. Literal barks. But also a total sweetheart?
Jfc I did not know about his crazy ass politics until today
Adding Park Chan Wook to the list now that he’s a fuckin scaaaaab
Michael Bay!
At the time of the LA Quartet I was in awe of Ellroy. Last book I read - Blood’s a Rover - I gave up. It seemed he’d gone from reflecting bigotry to getting off on the slurs Maybe too harsh. Don’t know. But wasn’t getting much out of it
Should be clear; I don’t think he was getting off on the racism. My reader’s suspicion was he was getting off on being transgressive
Vince Vaughn
He did a podcast interview a few years back with Andy Richter, whose podcast is taped near Paramount Studios. Ellroy pointed out that he spent his childhood in this area (where his dad lived). And that he used to shoplift at a local supermarket and was, at one point, homeless in a local park.
Andy Richter questioned him about his support of the LAPD. And he admitted he was a staunch supporter, despite all the various controversies. And I couldn't help but think how his life would be different if he didn't look the way he did. teamcoco.com/podcasts/the...
He lost me with “Perfidia”, so I’m good not continuing with his work anymore.
